It is physically connected (including switches and tracks) to an active route (just needs station finishes) while Roosevelt upper has tile work and trackways but no physical tracks or connections to active lines. |

That had to be quite a bold move - basically taking the gamble that it would be more important to have the Broadway Express tracks feed Brooklyn directly and bypass Lower Manhattan (back at a time when Lower Manhattan was more the center of things).I say it's bold because the move didn't mean just building a switch or two but rather changing entire elevations (when it came to the express tracks) and then stub-ending a potential three-track station. Even if, as wikipedia suggests, the Broadway Express - Manhattan Bridge path was only meant to be for the short-term, I'd say enough was done with the structure / elevations that they had to know it was more than that. And it turned out to make sense, now that Midtown is what it is, but I wonder how many were sure about it back then. |

If you want to include the IND Second Systems stations, only the ones that had SOME construction could be included. Obviously South 4th Street qualifies but the others not so much. Some of the "stations" only got as far as higher ceilings in existing stations where new stations would go. |

Consider too that the other connection to lower Manhattan, the Nassau Loop, was severed about 35 years after being completed. While that line also served the eastern division, it was also to be the route the special express trains were to use. I don't know the exact date it was severed, but when Chrystie opened they instead through routed the QJ and RJ to make up for the loss of the Banker's Specials, and also the TT that ran up there. They probably had to deadhead the specials to ENY once they severed the bridge connection but before Chrystie opened. And now only the J/Z serves the line and nothing goes through. The last time I rode an M train from Dekalb to Chambers, in the height of rush hour, it was only modestly full with a few people standing, but empty seats too. It was no wonder they killed the service altogether.But yea, imagine if instead of the bridge the expresses all ran through the tunnel. 5 lines of trains, now 4, all cramming onto those two tracks, a slow ride even now with just the R. |

Due to the realigning of the manny B tracks to connect to Chrystie, after the PM rush Thanksgiving eve, all BMT Bway trains operated vial the tunnel and manny B service didd not resume till midnight the following Sunday. |

If there was no link between the Broadway Express and the Manhattan Bridge, then as far as I can tell everything through Montague would have had to become a Broadway Express (with Broadway Locals originating at City Hall). Everything from DeKalb not going through Montague would have had to go over the bridge to Nassau St/Chambers or to wherever the Canal Street subway was going to take it. |

There use to be a police district office right there in that space.I was there some time ago, after a robbery attempt. Some jackass thought it was a good idea to snitch my phone and run. Got off the train right along with him, and proceeded to send him to his maker with my "little friend" I kept handy. Cops on the platform came along, broke up the situation, and after some back and forth we were taken downstairs and to the district office. Of course, you spend a LOT of time filling out this and that craziness, and when my husband got there, they finally said I was good to go. Everything would be sent to me via snail mail for follow up. The funny but true part,is the fact that this man thought I would be easy, but wound up attempting to file charges AGAINST ME for beating him up. When we left there, I noticed WHERE we were, and told my husband. He asked the same thing I was thinking,why is there a unused subway station here? When I had the chance to talk to Dad, he filled me in on the Whys and hows. I went back Once to the District Office after that, for paperwork purposes, and asked some officers about the space. Most of them were clearly in the dark, but some knew. I have never been back there again. As far as the wannabe robber, I went to all of the hearings, but was disappointed when all he got was 6 months in Spaford, with a year of probation. I literally stopped riding the subway for awhile after that, and never kept my phone in my hands while outside. I started using the subway again when I was assigned to a client who moved to NJ, always using caution. |

Some trains from the outer end would terminate on the upper level and others would connect to the Qns Blvd subway. By the way when the late George Abere and I walked the upper platform, it appeared that unlike the rest of the IND, the station was only 8 cars long, not 10. |
