R68/R68A Set on the Bravo

Seen in CCYD yesterday that mad scientist R68/R68A set which makes its rounds is now on the Bravo..

2846-44 coupled with 5034-36...

The AC is absolutely frigid in that train BTW...

Night and Day Operation Both Ends.

There is no reason that they should not operate together, safely. There are operating characteristics that are slightly different between the 68 and 68A, as I'm certain you are aware, but those differences do not affect the safe operation of the train. From one end, the train will feel like an R68 and from the other, an R68A. Perfectly okay in either direction, despite the myths.

Don't see why they haven't been operating together.
Yeah,there Would be some bucking, but all trains do it to a point.

Is this now a "regular thing"?

Hard to describe actually there is sometimes a slight “hitch delay ” when grabbing a brake but hey the train stops… It’s a adjustment if one is used to a R68 more than a R68A..

The main difference (that causes operational differences) is the diameter of the piping to the brake valve.

You know who got fired over this.

He was working the Bravo, northbound and made a local stop somewhere between 59 and 125.

After making a proper station stop, conductor opened the doors. Then he released some brake waiting for the conductor to close the doors and give indication.

But.....he released too much brake, and the train rolled and the new conductor pulled the cord and called Control.

His side of the story is that the train barely moved and the conductor overreacted.

But this happened to him previously. He was at Stillwell doing a standing brake test and let off too much brake. Train rolled.

It's a terminal and car cleaners are busy. A car cleaner banged him in when the train rolled.

Although both groups of Multis WH and GE could run together, their operating characteristics proved rather interesting. GE Multis had eddy current braking and WH cars had dynamic braking, which were similar but not completely identical. Mixed trains of both types would often buck like crazy when coupled together. The R-68/68A mix most likely operate the same way. As a side note, there were 2 groups of GOHed R-32s one with NYAB and the other with WABCO and they also operated in mixed trains. How did those trains operate?

WABCO (Phase I) and NYAB (Phase II) cars were assigned to JYD at the same time and regularly mixed in 10 car trains. They operated fine.

We were always suppose top do a running brake test but most of us never did it. The rolling test was to determine of there were any stuck air brakes in the train or any handbrakes applied.
