Chicago's streetcar routes were numbered. So were Denver's. Denver's bus routes are still numbered, but ever since RTD took over from Denver Tramways, route numbers align with Denver's grid system wherever possible. Hence the Broadway route is number zero since Broadway divides east and west.

BRT should be renamed to Bus-Operated Rapid Transit or BORT.

Come on, BORT?

Mommy, mommy, buy me a mass transit system!

Run along now, BORT.

Are you talking to me? No, my city also uses BORT.

In SF Operastor ios the preferred term be it diesel bus, trolleybus, streetcar, 'light rail'. The only division with other titles is Cable Cars--Grip, and Conductor. SF had one of America's greatest poets as a Conductor circa WWII--Maya Angelou.

As I understand it, the title “Motorman” was changed to “Rapid Transit Operator” (RTO) when C/Rs were eliminated and all service went OPTO broadbanding the motormen’s duties by adding door operation formerly performed by conductors. Many years ago on NYCTS the bus operators were similarly titled as “Surface Lines Operator” since persons in that title also operated streetcars. It took almost 10 years for the TA to realize that since there were no longer any streetcars in NYC, the title should be shortened to “Bus Operator.”

Boston’s problem is that it doesn’t run 24/7. These days with more people participating in nightlife in most urban areas 24/7 service should be a non negotiable requirement.

24/7 is unnecessary, especially weekdays. What percentage of riders would be served between 2am and 6am? Less than 1% of daily riders? Buses should be pretty efficient for that time period when there’s not much traffic. Or just Uber or taxi.

Yes, I have but not since the before times. What percentage of daily riders would you estimate ride between 2-5am? It's not a small number in raw terms but it's small when compared to the total.

One of the defects of the newer systems, BART and WMATA, is the disinterest in serving workers on the late shifts, and those who choose evening entertainment. Having to leave a concert before the musicianms stop playing to make the last train or face a huge taxi bull defeats the value of public transit. I would further add that in several cities, it has been evening and weekend ridership which has rebounded more than the 9to5 office workers.

I agree but you don’t need 24-hr service to serve most late and overnight workers and buses exist for the rest.

NYCT has struggled with state of good repair for most of the last 5 decades. If closing for a few hours each weeknight can help, then it makes sense to me.

NYCT has had maintenance issues for decades. I believe it is a function of under funding and poor management of resources. The maintenance excuse in BART's case is, I believe, partially an attitude that public transit is not an absolute necessity, because driving is the norm. It is a cultural difference.

Buses should be pretty efficient for that time period when there’s not much traffic.

So you go out and party somewhere in Manhattan and live in the wilds of Brooklyn. No way to have a useful bus for that.

NYC nighttime trains only run every 20 minutes and they get quite full. There isn't much money to be saved by shutting down for a few hours.

Also, plenty of people, including lots of transit workers, need to get to work by 5 AM. You could really only shut down from 2 AM to 4 AM before you the economy takes a real hit. What's the point of that? And now you have transit workers who have to get to a yard by 3:45 AM or get home from a yard at 2:15 AM. How are they going to do that?

I just Googled Tokyo subways. They run from 5 AM to midnight. Yikes! That means you have to head for home at 11 PM and you can't get to work till 6. Do you have any idea how much economic activity takes place in NYC from 11 PM to 2 AM and from 5 AM to 6 AM?

When I've had 6 AM flights out of an airport I've gotten into traffic jams in Manhattan at 4:30 AM.

London is busier and closes overnight. It's not as much of a late night city though.

Tokyo is much busier and it closes overnight. Same for Paris. Same for everywhere.

It's a small percentage of the population that needs to use trains between 1am and 5am and can be figured out.

If the NYC subway already ran a great service, then sure keep it open 24/7. But the reality is that it's falling behind the rest of the world in service, quality, safety, and cleanliness.

Evidently you never ridden a R train at 12:30-1:30 AM heading to Bay Ridge. It`s packed. D trains,L trains, F trains, A trains and 1,2,4 and 7, while not crush loaded have sizeable passenger loads also.

Most are very light while some are busy. Is not an accurate statement.

AZ is still a culture shock to me, even after 35 years. The sidewalks roll up after 9PM. I would take an afternoon flight into JFK, get in about 11:30 PM and head to Bklyn. It was a welcome relief to find plenty of restaurants open when I got to Bklyn.

While some of the present weekend/late night closures are inconvient there are plenty of alternate routes to use, including the LIRR from JFK/Jamaica.

agree, NYC has the most useful system. Part of that is just how long ago they started, and how dense the place is. Foryears, car rental weekend discountswere not valid in the 'tristate area' because warehousing your own inmuch of NYC is way too expensive for once a week usage.

Ha. It can't be much of a late night city because the Tube closes!

NYC provides the demand.

Consider MNRR, which does close at night, unlike LIRR, which doesn't. But even MNRR never really fully shuts down. It's first train of the morning departs New Haven at 4:00 AM. It's last train of the night arrives there at 3:56 AM. Grand Central itself manages to achieve no trains from 2:13 AM to 5:28 AM.

MNRR could eliminate some late night trains if it wanted to - they are answerable to virtually no one. But they don't because those early and late trains actually serve customers.
