[PHOTOS] The I.R.T. Walking Tour

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sat Jun 10 19:06:18 2023

Celebrating the 81st Anniversary of the I.R.T., The E.R.A. held a walking tour of items of interest (October 27, 1985).
The tour started at Grand Central on the shuttle. This should be the unused section of tunnel after the "H" system was adopted.

image host

Our group boarded regular in service #6 trains and we were keyed out to explore the ghosts of the past. Welcome to the abandoned Worth St station.

#6 train at warp speed :-)
image host

After Worth St we flagged down a #6 train and much to the astonishment of passengers, we all boarded for next stop, Brooklyn Bridge.
This is the abandoned south bound outer platform, mosaics intact.

image host

You are looking at the south end of the northbound platform. The original wall tiles are still there at the time this photo was taken.
Is that wooden sign still there ? If not, I hope the transit museum saved it.

image host

Here are the stairs to the abandoned outer platform. Notice the door the top of the stairs and a wall and door installed.
image host

With the stairs on the left, this is the view to my right.
image host

Our the next stop is City Hall. This what were riding back in 1985
image host

The fare control rotunda of the City Hall station has a circlular opening in the ceiling with incandescent lights surrounding it.
There must have been a skylight here a one time that probably was sealed over during World War II

Time to board the next #6 train to Brooklyn Bridge for some City Hall photos upstairs.
No time like the present for a group shot with Steve Zabel manning the camera.

THANKS FOR TAGGING ALONG !

I went on a Transit Museum tour called “Curios of the IRT” back in 1996. We toured the same closed side platform area at BB but not the closed station at Worth. Instead we toured the closed inner platform at SF.

There was either a MOD or Transit Museum tour that visited the abandoned 91st Street station on the 1, then both 18th and Worth on the 6, City Hall and the N/B platform at BB

Most likely a transit museum sponsored tour. I attended all MOD trips and don't recall visiting those abandoned stations you mentioned.

It was a Transit Museum tour as I did it in the early 90's. It was led by a Train Service Supervisor from the 6 Line. We visited the abandoned 91st Street station on the 1, then both 18th and Worth on the 6, City Hall and the N/B platform at BB.

If I had to hazard a guess, the first photo is the walkway that leads down to Grand Central Master from the shuttle passageway.

The former IRT trackway shown in the photo is now a narrow hot corridor that eventually leads past a very, very hot signal equipment room next to the Grand Central Station Tower/Crew Reporting office. The trackway is now lined with various MoW storage, offices, and communication rooms.

The place is just plain nasty!!!
