WMATA: Silver Line Phase II System Map

Posted by Sand Box John on Wed Oct 12 09:06:58 2022

This is the Silver line Phase II System Map.

You will notice a few other changes to the map.

Station name changes:

Largo Town Center>Downtown Largo
Prince George’s Plaza>Hyattsville Crossing
White Flint>North Bethesda
Tysons Corner>Tysons
West Falls Church VT-UVA>West Falls Church VT
Potomac Yardshown asFuture

WMATA eliminated the need to print a new map for the opening of the Potomac Yard station by placing a sticker on the map that shows it as future.

WMATA has yet to announce dates for the opening of Silver line Phase II or Potomac Yard. Both were projected to open some time during the fourth quarter of this year. It is still likely for Silver line Phase II, however Potomac Yard will likely open sometime in early 2023 as undesirable underlying soils conditions along the tie in alignment were discovered to be greater then what was expected. The tie in alignment work began on 09 10 2022 requiring the closing of all of the station south of National Airport. Service south of National Airport was to be restored on 10 22 2022 with trains running through the new station, but has been pushed to 11 05 2022 because of the underlying soils conditions. Also on 09 10 2022 Yellow line service was suspended to allow repairs to the segmented steel lined tunnels between L'Enfant Plaza and the fan shaft at Water Street SW along with maintenance work to be done to the Charles R. Fenwick Bridge over the Potomac River. Service along on Yellow line is to resume on a yet to be announced date in May of 2023. The Yellow line stations south of King Street will be serviced by the Blue line (1.3 MB PDF file).

Is the Silver Line now the longest line?

Yes, the total length of the Silver line is 40.5 miles between Ashburn and Largo.

The length of the Silver line branch from Ashburn to its junction with the Orange line east of the West Falls Church is 8 miles less then total length of the 31.5 mile long Red line.

Is there some reason to change Largo Town Center to Downtown Largo?

Prince George's County requested WMATA change the station name because "the area is undergoing a redevelopment with a new medical center, housing, and businesses". None of that or what is there today existed during the planning to build the station. Hell, the pavement for the parking lot that surrounded the demolished Capitol Center Arena was still there when the contractor was clearing the site south of the parking lot for the construction of the Metrorail station.

Prince George's County used basically the same reasoning to change Prince George’s Plaza to Hyattsville Crossing.

White Flint was change to North Bethesda at the request of Montgomery County as the adjacent mall of the same that use to anchor the area was closed several years ago.

Tysons Corner was shorten to simple Tysons at the request of Fairfax County as the area is far larger then Tysons Corner named after William Tyson who purchased a tract of land in the 1850s at what use to be the country crossroad of Chain Bridge Road and Leesburg Pike.

I recently read that the DMV has the highest percentage of work from home in the country. By quite a bit. If that stays like that, I wonder what form rail ridership will take in the future? Will it's system designed to bring suburban commuters to downtown offices ever recover?

WMATA is projecting ridership to return to 75 percent of pre "pandemic" levels in 2025.

Thanks for that. Without looking it up, I seem to recall that they based their ridership recovery estimates based on not much at all. I think that it's just an aspirational estimate.

Sand Box John has already said that when the silver line extension opens it will be the longest line.
How long are the other lines ? Assume we board at one terminal and stay on that train to the other terminal with no short turns.

Thanks in advance.

Chuck: The Red Line between Shady Grove and Glenmont is currently the longest at 30.3. miles. The Blue Line between Franconia and Springfield is next at 30.3.

Currently the Silver Line between Largo and Wiehle is 29.6 miles long. The extension to Ashburn will add another 11.5 miles. That would make over 42 miles long. It will now take about two full days for a railfan to ride the entire system.

You can calculate those lengths by adding the chaining distances at both ends of the routes the line runs on. The chaining distances are measured at the centers of the platforms, so add 600' to get the distance from end of platform to end of platform.

129 mile track map.

Note: When calculating the length of the Blue line subtract 6,750 as the chaining for the J Route sets back 6,750' at C&J Junction.

I have compiled the breakdown, I am in the process of doing the HTML markup in tables for subway, surface and elevated.

This old man just turned 65 and I am working 6 days a week putting in more then 40 hours.
