VIDEO: Taking A Ride Inside R-10 #3189.

Posted by William A. Padron on Wed Sep 21 18:53:52 2022

As captured on YouTube, a round trip inside R-10 #3189 during the 2022 "Parade of Trains" along the BMT Brighton Line. This was recorded on Sunday, September 18. Enjoy, and listen to that original WABCO A-1 3YC air compressor (if you can above the noise from the passengers).

William: It was nice to meet you the other day.

If I remember when the R-10's were first repainted it was in a blue and white scheme similar to the one used on the IRT World's Fair cars.

The car pictured above seems to be more turquoise than blue.

Am I right or is my memory playing tricks.

IRTRedbrdR33: It was great to meet you as well.

The car pictured above seems to be more turquoise than blue.

The paint job used in the restoration was a deeper hue, but you are right in thinking the scheme is now more turquoise than aqua or teal, or blue. The shop forces and volunteers might have been using certain images as a basis that had that special scheme, but had been processed differently though.

Perhaps these images from the nycsubway.org website should be more a clearer indication as to what they looked like really fresh from the paint shop. I am sure has time goes by, the newly restored #3189 will see its exterior paint scheme faded over in time though.

It sounded like that was an original compressor. Maybe the R12 and R15 have theirs too. The 3184 has something modern like an R27 when they got that out.

Yes, that was what I was told by someone closely with the restoration of R-10 #3189 that it has its original WABCO A-1 3YC one, and you are correct, #3184 was given a modern air compressor (a la R-27) when it was done at 207th Street Shop in 2017.

I have taken rides on museum cars #5760 (R-12) and #6239 (R-15), and they have their original air compressors too, just like #3189 (R-10)

Kodachrome doesn't lie (Feb 1968)

You are correct, it does not!

It may have been the wrong shade of paint to be applied on #3189 (looking more aquamarine greenish), as this was done with volunteers at 207th Street Shop.

It could have been better, but I will give them credit in reviving the car after that NYCTA facility was to receive them, as transferred from Pitkin Yard in 2017, and putting them on the list of cars to be restored.

This is how I remember it. I thought 3189 was definitely the wrong color. I worked at an advertising agency for a while and color meant everything to the graphics people. "Close enough" was never close enough. It had to be the exact Pantone color or it went back to the printer.

For that matter I never thought the standards or triplexes were the right color. They weren't brown, they were "subway dust black".

Yeah, for the poles that used in the restoration of #3189, they were the stainless steel ones, not the original porcelain ones though. They must have been salvaged off a newer SMEE car instead.

Most but not all of the hardware were re-installed on the car, but all of the seats have been placed back in, but in the 2-2 arrangement (not the 3-2 one from 1969). All six side roll sign boxes are there, but a few roller curtains are missing.

The floor design is a semi-reaction of the diamond and daul lines (around the seats) format, but the color scheme follows that of R-7A #1575 currently. The side doors in the interior appear to be a bit darker than that of #1575 and #3184.

Speaking of #3184, one of your A.C.F. builders' plate is placed at one of the car. On the flip side, its six side roll sign boxes are all missing! And its ceiling needs to be repainted again thoroughly.

Yeah, that is one person said to me too, that it should had sported "A" signs in the car. I would agree to that also, but the TM called the shots as to what was to be displayed on #3189 for this event, even if there were no front roll sign boxes to locate for the car, just deal with recreated inserts instead though.

Same aspect for the other museum cars in use for "The Parade oF Trains", in which the R-16 (#6387) and the six R-1/9's did not have their respective roll signs. All missing, and using recreated inserts.

Thanks for that clarification. I was thinking that they reinstalled the 3 by 2 seating arrangement. Rode in 3189 many times, but never in the lead or rear car position.

One quick question. Did they also restore those side window destination signs? As I recall, when they worked, they were backlit with a green florescent bulb highlighting the destination. Thanks in advance.

On #3189 from the inside, all six side boxes were there, bit with only maybe two roller curtains were missing. Those that had them were signed up as "SPECIAL", "CONCOURSE-BEDFORD PK" and just blank. On the outside, they were all still painted over with that deep blue color from its school car days, thus not cleaned and scrubbed off.

Yes, they originally were green lighted in their day back then, and one box in R-7A #1575 still has that way too (the others are white replacements, which were also placed on the R-10's when so the shop forces would had done so). On #3189, no lights on the boxes were seen lit during that weekend.

Only #3184 was the one that was GOH'd in the green scheme in 1985, and a NYAB rotary screw compressor installed. The car was removed from passenger service in August 1989.

#3189 was removed from passenger service in 1984, and that became the RCI Office and School Car in Pitkin Yard. It never was GOH'd, so it was able to retain its original WABCO A-1 3YC air compressor.

While #3184 is owned by RPC on loaned to the TM, #3189 was transferred to become a TM-owned museum car in 2007. Ten years later, both cars finally went to 207th Street Shop to be worked on and be revived in an operable state.

#3184 had to have a replacement air compressor, salvaged from a newer and different model of SMEE car. It made its debut on a "Nostalgia Special" run on the entire "Q" route to/from 96th-2nd on Sunday, July 30, 2017.

#3189's restoration took longer, but that went into high gear during 2022 as the shop forces and volunteers put the car back together. The original air compressor was revived, and went under its own power.

After a shakedown test run on the IND this month in September 2022, #3189 joined sister @3184 and R-16 #6387, plus a set of R-32's went down to Coney Island Yard on Friday, September 16, 2022. The R-1/9's and the BMT AB's also made their way to that storage facility.

At long last, this year's "Trains of Many Metals" (#3189-3184-6387) went into service in this year's "Parade of Trains" during the weekend of September 17-18, 2022. #3189 ran and sounded fine in all of its trips.
