BMT Nassau Loop & ex-SIRT cars.

Posted by Elkeeper on Mon Sep 5 15:30:24 2022

I am not on Facebook, but one of my friends is. He said he saw a photo of an ex-SIRT train at the BMT Broad St station. Did these SIRT trains ever run on Nassau St, or was it, perhaps, a work train?

Did you mean Fulton St and not Broad St ?
It's either a Culver-Nassau or West End local.

Mike: They did run in service on Nassau Street.

I had a summer job in the City Hall area in 1958. I'd frequently take the Jamaica Ave El to get there.

My downtown train was frequently delayed by a Culver Exp train crossing ahead to use the Nassau St Loop in the downtown direction. They used the SIRT trains for this service.

When they first came to the BMT, the SIRT cars ran on the Culver-Nassau line. After the Culver line was reduced to a shuttle between 9th and Ditmas in 1959, they ran on the West End Local (Nassau St). The SIRT cars were retired and scrapped in 1961.

I'm not so sure about them being scrapped in '61. Retired, perhaps.
Some of those cars remained in the yards as school cars or whatever, into the mid 60's.
I was in high school then, and first learned about those strange cars in the yards.

There was a later fire circa 1961 after the NYCTA had scrapped its SIRT cars and had none available to sell back to SIRT.

Fire was the bane of the Staten Island Railroad. They lost five cars in the 1927 Tottenville fire, eight in the 1946 St George fire and seven in the 1962 Clifton fire.

Two cars survive. 366 is at the Sea Shore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine.

388 is at the Shoreline Trolley Museum in East Haven, Connecticut.

The TA was willing to sell some of the Standards to SIRT. The stumbling block was the ICC requirement that the cars meet mainline railroad standards.

In the summer of 1960 or 1961, I rode a SIRT train set on the Franklyn Shuttle to Fulton Street. I don't recall the number of cars, but what caught my eye was the IRT Lo-V style end doors and split A/B style center door as I walked across the platform at Prospect Park station.

Wow.
This is a basic BMT design and looks like it could do well in the NYCT system.

I'm under the impression that the Broad St subway was some what based on the BMT/IND dimensions.

Good original photos of the B3 Broad Street cars. These 50 cars numbered from 151 to 200.
These cars saw 45 years of service and the fleet was formally retired in 1983 along with the 150 1928 B1 cars
and the 25 1936 "Bridge" B2 cars that were built for Bridge Line (Camden-Locust) service.
The current fleet of Kawasaki B4 cars would replace all three older car types.

There have been one each of these three cars saved for preservation and in storage at Fern Rock with 1928
car #1 in its original paint scheme. A fourth car was kept for parts (a 1928 I believe). I know of rail enthusiasts
that are trying to find a good place for these cars in a museum or some other sort of preserved state but have
run into storage problems - trying to keep them underground on spur tracks at or near stations such as lower
level PAT&Tison Station they have attracted homeless vagrants as an example.

In recent years SEPTA tried at one point to sell off these cars for scrap - but since SEPTA does not own them -
the four cars are City of Philadelphia property officially - the City ordered that they be kept.

The mechanical interior station sign was one of the more interesting features of the 1938 cars and it would be
interesting to find out when their use was discontinued. I recall these signs were painted over and wonder if
the mechanical destination roll sign itself was intact inside the box or was it removed...

I`m with you on that. My plan is to get all the famous Philly people along with the sports team to chip in to restore and return those BSL cars to service. Run a Nostalgia Program similar to NYCTA/MTA. Bring those trains out on opening days for the sports teams. Do special outing on PATCO and restoring the connection between the two lines.

It`s a shame to see them lanquishing.
