I had a summer job in the City Hall area in 1958. I'd frequently take the Jamaica Ave El to get there.

My downtown train was frequently delayed by a Culver Exp train crossing ahead to use the Nassau St Loop in the downtown direction. They used the SIRT trains for this service.
