BMT Nassau Loop & ex-SIRT cars. |

Posted by Elkeeper on Mon Sep 5 15:30:24 2022 I am not on Facebook, but one of my friends is. He said he saw a photo of an ex-SIRT train at the BMT Broad St station. Did these SIRT trains ever run on Nassau St, or was it, perhaps, a work train? |

I'd frequently take the Jamaica Ave El to get there.My downtown train was frequently delayed by a Culver Exp train crossing ahead to use the Nassau St Loop in the downtown direction. They used the SIRT trains for this service. |

When they first came to the BMT, the SIRT cars ran on the Culver-Nassau line. After the Culver line was reduced to a shuttle between 9th and Ditmas in 1959, they ran on the West End Local (Nassau St). The SIRT cars were retired and scrapped in 1961. |

I don't recall the number of cars, but what caught my eye was the IRT Lo-V style end doors and split A/B style center door as I walked across the platform at Prospect Park station. |

I know of rail enthusiasts that are trying to find a good place for these cars in a museum or some other sort of preserved state but have run into storage problems - trying to keep them underground on spur tracks at or near stations such as lower level PAT&Tison Station they have attracted homeless vagrants as an example. In recent years SEPTA tried at one point to sell off these cars for scrap - but since SEPTA does not own them - the four cars are City of Philadelphia property officially - the City ordered that they be kept. The mechanical interior station sign was one of the more interesting features of the 1938 cars and it would be interesting to find out when their use was discontinued. I recall these signs were painted over and wonder if the mechanical destination roll sign itself was intact inside the box or was it removed... My plan is to get all the famous Philly people along with the sports team to chip in to restore and return those BSL cars to service. Run a Nostalgia Program similar to NYCTA/MTA. Bring those trains out on opening days for the sports teams. Do special outing on PATCO and restoring the connection between the two lines.It`s a shame to see them lanquishing.
