People in Bed-Stuy, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Queens benefit from having the Fulton St. stop on the G/GG if they are going to/from that neighborhood, which in its day was a shopping/entertainment hub.By that logic, they could have eliminated 49th Street on the Broadway BMT and made people transfer at Times Square to/from the 1. No big deal, right? |

That 49th St. stop on the N/R/W can be quite busy during rush hours as is the 50th St. station on the 1 just a short distance away. The same goes for the 51st St. stop on the 6 which is also a transfer point to the E/M trains at 53rd and Lex. I suspect that they are among the busiest local stations in the system. |

Looking at this track map (which granted doesn't show any grade differences), not sure if there would be room. Now if the switches between the tracks from the Transit Museum (which become the local Fulton St tracks) and the tracks from Manhattan (which become the express tracks) were to be moved further east, you maybe could put switches between the A/C tracks and the G tracks where those other switches are now (that's only if the G tracks maintain grade long enough before ducking under the westbound tracks). In any event, I doubt MTA would want to bother with that. |

The tracks take a descending dip at each end of the "G" line tracks at Hoyt-Schermerhorn, as to go under the infrastructure, so there is no wiggle room to put any switches there between those and the ones for the "A"/"C" Fulton Street Line tracks. Also, there is a wall that separates the Manhattan-bound Fulton Street Line local track and the Queens-bound Crosstown Line track just west of the Fulton/Lafayette combo.It should be noted the "G"'s Fulton Street station along Lafayette Avenue is the closest to Fulton itself, with the main entrance/exit there at its west end of the location, plus a secondary one at the east end for South Portland Avenue. Meanwhile, the "A"/"C"'s Lafayette Avenue station has it positioned a bit further away from Lafayette itself, with the entrances/exits at South Portland Avenue and South Oxford Street along Fulton Street. There were some painted lettering on the mezzanine tiles leading towards Greene Avenue. A free transfer connecting tunnel built under South Portland Avenue would not be practical and feasible, and oddly despite having a mezzanine at the Lafayette Avenue station, there is no reverse direction free transfer available because of the metal fencing that separates there, a la like 75th Avenue on the Queens Boulevard line, unless you can use your unlimited Metrocard to do so. -William A. Cs didn't have that problem since they kept their original BU trucks. The problem with the Qs was they had the IRT Composite maximum traction trucks installed and maxi,um traction trucks don't perform well with trailers in the consist. |

That was because the B of T officials felt that when 2 Q units were coupled together the weight of 2 sets of 2 motor trucks in a small area would be too heavy for the Manhattan el structure. The easy way was to replace the Qs' trucks with the maximum traction (single motor) trucks from the Composites then being scrapped. The problem could have been solved just as easily by moving the motor trucks of the Qs to the #2 ends of the A and C sections which would have prevent kept the rucks within the unit slightly more than a car length apart mitigating the weight problem without diminishing their pulling capability. |
