It did, in fact one or two trains that ran to Astoria as QB's returned southbound as N trains. I also recall the Museum R1-9 train being in daily QB service, it made the trip north around 8am if I recall correctly and then returned to CIY light over the Sea Beach line and then did the exact in the PM rush. |

When I was a conductor from 11/79 to 2/81 I worked some QB Specials, 1 round trip on overtime before/after your regular job. Specials no longer exist today. The first 2 QB's from Stillwell went to Astoria, then returned as RR's to 36th St/4th Ave. and laid up.On the PM, 2 early RR lay-ups at Astoria got changed over to the last 2 QB's, went to Stillwell, then laid up for RR service for the next morning. I worked these a couple of times as a vacation relief conductor. |

The QBs that you are referring to were the post Chrystie QBs that ran as rush hour only specials. Prior to Chrystie, the Brighton lcls that ran through the tunnel when Brighton exps operated carried QT signs and when the Brighton exps stopped running, the Brighton lcls ran vial the bridge and displayed QB signs. The Brighton lcls ran to Astoria 24/7 and during rush hours were supplemented by West End (T) expresses on the Astoria branch. |

The way the typesetting on the '23rd ST. - ELY AVE.' station name tablet - particularly the shape of the 'S' as well as of the numbers - point to it being prepared in or around 1937 at the earliest. It certainly matches with the 169th Street station in the overall shape (especially the 'S' within the name tablet), and preceded the tiling for the three local stations on the Sixth Avenue line. 23rd / Ely is the last new station in the entire system to bear the pre-lettered / numbered tile variant in use since the late 1920's when tiling for the stations between 207th and 116th Streets and again from West 4th Street to Chambers Street/Hudson Terminal (now World Trade Center) was put in. As also used on the following other stations opened up to the end of 1933:- Bronx Concourse: 205th Street through 174th-175th Street - Queens Boulevard: Queens Plaza to 46th Street - South Brooklyn: Bergen Street to Church Avenue - Brooklyn Crosstown: Court Square to Nassau Avenue - Jay Street-Borough Hall |

If I were in charge of the lettered tile replacement program, there would have been a small "AND" between "STREET" and "TRANSFER" at Metropolitan/Grand - and no space separation. As for the 'Q' in Court Square, that same variant was used in only one other station - Queens Plaza. (Whose 'Z', in turn, was also turned sideways in place of 'N' in some portions of the Kingsbridge Road station of the Concourse line.) |

Meaning, letters or numbers (white type on black background) printed by some fashion on 4¼" x 4¼" tiles, that's the "pre-lettered/numbered" I speak of, seen on many a sidewall below tile bands opposite island platforms. It's different from the name tablets in stations with side platforms. |

The gear pitch was your speedometer.A-440 was right about 45 mph. During the Parade of Trains in 2004, the IND old timers hit a jaw-dropping B (middle line on the treble staff) above middle C, which had to be approaching 50. If only I'd had my Smartphne with the speedometer app then... |

The super-clean state of the station and lack of even a single passenger tells me that this was a publicity shot and/or a test train just before the line opened. Also, I'd never want to argue with anyone who remembers, or has spoken to anyone who remembered, what things were like back then- but everything I've read tells me that the first Queens Boulevard service was provided by the E. Maybe they wanted to designate it as such, even though it was a local, to make it the primary letter for the line- sort of like how the 8th Ave Line is the A- even though the D runs on it a lot (as did the original C, back then)? |
