[PHOTOS] The Mystery Hudson & Manhattan RR Building

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Jan 25 15:55:35 2018

April 1983.
I was told at an ERA meeting by Steve Zabel about an abandoned building in New Jersey that was part
of the Hudson & Manhattan RR (now PATH). So I headed out there, by car with a friend and took the two photos posted here.
The location, if I'm correct was what remained of the Erie Railroad terminal. The H&M Pavonia station should be below
so was this the entrance ?

Is the building still standing? Looks like the power was disconnected
back them.

Is the building still standing?

Probably not. This area is all built up and you wouldn't recognize it today.

Paul Carleton's H&M Revisited book has Pavonia station becoming Erie Station and then Newport station after the Erie moved service to Hoboken.

Locating Newport station on Historic Aerials and then rolling back the dates shows a building fitting your picture next to the Erie roundhouse in 1966 and then standing isolated in 1979. In 1987 it has a rebuilt shape and in 1994 the present entry building appears 250-300 feet east on land that was tracks and parking in 1966. The rebuilt shape shows in Google street view in the median of Washington Blvd. on the north side of Town Square Pl..

Please scroll down on this link to find the description of the Speedwalk or Travelator installed in the H&M Erie/Pavonia station in 1954.
  • Speed of 1.5 mph

  • ---
Both in the old days and nowadays I get mixed up, turned around as I go from the Tubes platform to the surface. Maybe the route of the Speedwalk is now an ascending passageway.

Those boarded up doors under the canopies look like some of the H&M station entrances I recall seeing at various stations along the system.

    Looks like a vent house.

The decorative canopies above the doorways would lead to it's use for passengers exiting and leaving the building in inclement weather.

Pavonia station becoming Erie Station and then Newport

It's the other way around. Erie station was the original name (as shown by the "E"s on the station columns), then it became Pavonia Ave., then Pavonia-Newport, and finally just Newport.

    A scattergun reply:

Mike: you are correct, I misread Carleton's description of the changes in the station names.

Bill's present day picture: No, that's new entry from the 1987-94. The rebuilt entry is the one with the pale green doors here . As Mike mentions it's providing ventilation. It may also be over the stairways down to the station mezzanine and platforms.

Bill's old Erie picture: Those IRT style entries are on this old webpage . Select 5. Tube Stations and go 1/4 way down. They connected the two stations.

David Pirmann's site discusses this station about 2/3's of the way down and at the bottom you can select pictures by location to see some interior shots. The location of the travellator is mentioned and so is a passage to the Erie Station.
