So to get to downtown Brooklyn and beyond, we schlep over to a ferry on the Brooklyn waterfront, probably on a bus, because nobody will hoof it from Marcy Avenue or wherever, take the ferry, take a connecting bus to some place the Lex, then get on the 4, 5, or 6, and if the 6, transfer back to the 4 or 5 to get to Brooklyn. As I said, Ridiculous, it's not a daily commute, it's an adventure to do on a sunny, warm Saturday, and it does nothing for real estate nor economic development along the trolley route. |

Still a ridiculous idea to tell people traveling from one point on the Queens/Brooklyn waterfront area to another, to go to Manhattan and back.Whether public money should be used to create a direct public transit route should depend on how many people make that journey, how far that journey is and the existing alternatives. The BQX flunks all three criteria. The $2.5 billion should be used on projects for which people don't have an existing subway line within 1/2 mile of their residence, links to a point that better matches their journey to work and for which that journey is longer than 4 miles. There are plenty of areas and potential customers who meet these criteria. |

Since no subway line goes north-south within a half mile, except the G train at the endpoints, your criteria of any rapid transit within a half mile is completely irrelevant.Since no cost , benefit, or economic analysis has been done, you are in no position to say whether or not it flunks all criteria. |

Extending the F train to Queens Village is not on the table. So maybe we have the wrong table. There is vast proof that extending the F would have demand - look at the packed buses that run from east Queens to 179th every day. There is ample proof that the demand for a shoreline trolley is relatively low. - Census figures as to how many people live there - Bus utilization of lines in the area - Utilization of the 19 subway stops that are within about 1/2 mile of the waterfront OK, there has not been a formal study. But that doesn't mean we don't have a decent idea of how the traffic numbers would come out. |

The ferry has the benefit of bouncing over to Manhattan every few stops (killing 2 birds with 1 stone), but the light rail map shows it going into downtown Brooklyn. The ferry is cheaper upfront but more expensive in the long run. I love the ferry, but I'm just trying to be real. |

Paul Simon was the centrist Democrat backed by the hard right Republicans to get rid of Percy. Think Lieberman who was used to get rid of Weicker. Indeed in the Eisenhower era there was cooperation. But, the vitriol and obstructionism has accelerated since Watergate. With a vegetable acting as President, the crazies had a field day and the shift from Dixiecrat to GOP in the Confederate states solidified. None of those you mention could get through a primary inthe GOP today.Rail content. The inconsistency of the few Republicans supporting eityher Amtrak or local public transit/commuter trains (that's SOCIALISM, you know) is always entertaining. Remember when we had aan MTA mmgmt type on this board with a very authoritarian personality who professed contempt for libruls yet couldn't grok that his job only existed because he was employed in a socialist enterprise. |
