I believe part of the problem was, the cars were too heavy to install air conditioning. That likely was a deal breaker there.

Thanks. Not to abuse your generosity in sharing your knowledge, but this leads me to 2 additional questions:

1) When was the last revenue run of any R30s? (not talking about the June 1993 fan trip)

2) When was the last revenue run of the R27s?

Thanks :)

That’s the story I heard although I can’t imagine that it would have made the cars heavier than the D types which were supposed to have been the heaviest equipment on the NYCTS.

Glad to help if I can.

1) When was the last revenue run of any R30s? (not talking about the June 1993 fan trip)

Tuscarora Almanac - June 25, 1993 - The Book of Last Runs

The last train of R-30’s and R-30A’s ran in service today on the “C” Concourse-8th Avenue-Fulton Street Local. The consist was
R-30A 8408-8397
R-30 8322-8305
R-30 8298-8295
R-30A 8396-8393

2) When was the last revenue run of the R27s?

I could not find an exact date for the last run of the R-27's. All cars except one were out of service by June 1989. 8042 lasted a little longer because she was coupled to an R-30.

Some cars were worth a GOH and some were not. The Standards that received their last overhaul in 60-61 were already 40 years old going in. The Triplexes were retired as oddballs after 37-38 years. Did the R27/30s even make it to 30?

Just barely so it seems. They weren't great cars from the beginning similar to their predecessors the R-16s which eventually also got scrapped due to lack of maintenance and poor performance. They were the first B division cars to have perimeter seating IRT-style which made them easier to clean (which the TA didn't do very often if at all).

Wow...so the R27s had an even shorter service life than the R21/22s, it seems.

In fact, no "seems" about it. At least one 21/22 is in service on Staten Island as RD344.

Back in the day, they were matched. Seems around 1975 or 1976 they got mixed up (definitely so by the time I departed NYC in late August 1976).

Maybe if they had gotten a real GOH, they would have been matched up like their IRT cousins (R-26/R-28), which were also mixed up pre-GOH (many times a -26 with a -28). The one exception was the cars assigned to the 6 (7800-7899) which were always paired up properly (AFAIK).

That's true during GOH the H2CA couplers were removed and replaced by drawbars similar to what was done on the R-29 and R-33 cars at the factory. Not one R-26 or R-28 car was lost due to a wreck in the 40+ years they operated on the IRT. The last ACF built cars anywhere on the system....ACF decided to focus on freight cars since there was little or no market for passenger cars after the late 1950's since many of the railroads which operated passenger trains were slowly going broke and filing train off petitions by the dozens.

Actually, many of the R-26s and 28s assigned to Pelham were split up in the early 1960s. I call seeing a N/B Pelham train at 59 St that had a single R-26 in the consist without any mate at all.

I thought the last unrebuilt ones were done by 1989. May be confusing them with the R27's.

The R30's lifespan was shortened by a decision to have a 100% air conditioned fleet. The overhauled cars had years of life left in them in 1993. They could have ran into the 21st century.

IIRC, April/May of 1989. As soon as the last R68A was in revenue service, they yanked them.
