And older locomotives had cages over the glass so that dropped cement blocks wouldn't penetrate?If you're running and somebody throws something or shoots at your train, you call it in and let the cops do their job. Sure, s/he doesn't have access to a speedometer, but I think anyone can tell that 106mph is not 70..Plus, s/he has a hand held radio. Why was there no "Amtrak 188 conductor to the engineer.... steady up" or "be aware of track speed, engineer. Conductor out." |

That would be correct and if the engineer had just acknowledged the alerter and then became incapacitated by some sort of projectile through the vision glass, that could explain why the brakes did not apply right away. It is known that the train brakes did apply in emergency immediately prior to the derailment so an unfortunate combination of events could have made for the perfect storm. |

No.A VIA Rail train from Niagara Falls to Toronto (since discontinued) had 3 engineersin the cab, all of them missed a slow diverging route signal, it derailed, and killed 2 or 3 of them. |

Apparently, now we are hearing the windshield was cracked and people heard something hit the train beforehand. The windshield will be investigated tonight (Friday).Could be that this was an act of vandalism and if so, whoever did it if caught could very well be facing eight counts of Criminally Negligent Homicide and countless other charges. |

What is the more likely story:The engineer being worried that he would be shot at and sped up to avoid it. Or... The engineer was ACTUALLY being shot at, he ducks down, the controller gets knocked forwards, by the time he gets up, train has approached curve at full speed, he throws it into emergency, train derails. |
