Hello everyone!

The Preservation Experience: R16 Car 6398 was a smashing success! We got a number of things done last Saturday and hit some milestones along the way. The event focused on R16 Car 6398, a subway car with lots of history and a story to tell. She was retired from passenger service by 1987 and quickly picked up for preservation by a group of individuals who were interested in preserving history. Today, she sits at the Trolley Museum of New York, the only post-war NYCTA B-Division subway car privately owned.

A number of people came out to help and we thank them for lending a hand! We also would like to thank The Trolley Museum of New York for allowing us into their home. Everyone involved is amazing! If you missed out on this event, not to worry, for we're planning a similar event in a few weeks...and an even bigger event in the Spring! Keep an eye out for that soon!

Here are some of the scenes of The Preservation Experience! Please enjoy.

Whitcomb Diesel Locomotive 9 was also worked on. She roared to life but there's still more to do!

The rest can be viewed here!

Uncle Harold's baby. :)

I really hope we can get electrons hooked up those tracks soon. Good news at least is that wrap and that extra paint will help it get through another winter. Harry, Evan and the rest have put half of their life into that car. Hope you got to meet them.

Good work and thanks for your efforts.

I'm sure 6398's sponsor is also grateful. You can learn a lot from him...

Hey, don't feel bad! I've been off on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for close to 14 years. I've gone up during the week with HG to see 6398.

Was spending Wednesdays at Branford as Motorperson on their historic Trolley Cars... Did that continuously for 8 years and then decided to move on to other things. I'm getting the urge to return home and see THE STAR of the Amazing Spiderman 2. One of these days, I WILL BE THERE.

Hope no one will roast me over an open fire for tooting the horn, heh!

I have yet to MEET HG in the flesh. Tried to catch up with him many times on PATH and always missed the interval. :(

And cord pulls either for air or dumping it are highly overrated. I want to see Central Headache fry the gas tanks and throw some 600 volt return current across all those thermite welds. Now THAT would be the teats! :)

Saddest part yet is that I lived in Ulster county for almost ten years and never once got to TMNY. STILL haven't. :(

Done Branford several times, and being a local, that ramps up the remorse even more.

Yep ... I keep hoping that the planets align. When I first left the city, moved to Plattekill, just south of New Paltz. You know the thruway and how that all fits. Live in Zoo Paltz for a number of years, built a radio station, sold it and moved further north to Rosendale which might as well be Kingston.

Branford is a day trip and change from here, hard to get to, though I've done it. Kingston is only about 90 miles south of here and might as well be in Connecticut for the spare time I need to do it. I'm still hoping to get down there THIS year, but NEXT is definite.

I do electricals ... and I'm good at it. :)

The graffiti was done to the car by an outside group cause the museum needed money and the car really needed a repaint.

No R30s live in Cali, the ones used in Money Train and Die Hard was scrapped, the only R30s around are still in the subway system.

Batteries on the R16 car were cleaned up, components were scrubbed down. Much of the flooring was recemented and some of the glass, particularly that of the map housing, was replaced. Emergency brake cords were replaced, and lots of clean-up was done throughout the car. Regarding Diesel #9, she was turned on and roaring after a number of tweaks with batteries and other things. It was a day-long process. She does have one more thing to troubleshoot, though (air supply-related, I believe), before she can roll again.

However, the rest of the roof vent panels on 6398 have to be removed and repainted (on 10/15, an outside contractor will begin preparations for repainting). The cement that was recently layed down has to be evened out with some sanding (the process was already started). Most of the floor trim surrounding the seat panels on the floor have been removed (most of the screws holding them in place haven't been untightened since 1955! So many of those screws needed to be removed with chissel and hammer). The rest of the electrical work has to be completed.

Anything else i'm forgetting can also chime in.

Not exactly. The graffiti was all done by outside sponsorship; the money that was received by said sponsorships is to go to the repainting of 6398.

As for the R30s, pretty much all of them that went out to California were cut up for scrap, I believe.

If the plastic wrap peels, can't they just print up another set, peel off the old and reapply? May not last as long but easier than trying to maintain a painting. Unless they painted on plastic, which IMO is the worst of both worlds.

Agreed ... but let's also face the reality that the vast majority were fat black markers and truly bit the bag too. Of all of them there are two tag-ups from back then that I sadly wish had been recorded for history ... the Tina Turner train and the jungle train, both of which ran for quite a while on the 2 and the 5.

The Tina Turner Train? I would have loved to have seen that!

The Village Voice had a full page center spread sometime between '77-'79 with landscape photos of grafitti murals spread over an entire car side.
They were well drawn and elaborate.

I did not come on earlier in this thread, but I also assume it's been discussed before - how obvious it is, that the idea of car wrapping commercials
probably was directly influenced by those car length muraals/ tag ups.

Speaking of legit "murals" might also want to check out the dinosaur designs on the Isle of Wight 1938 Tube Stock:

Yeah, went looking again to see if there was any sign of that car, turns out it was an R10 and Train Dude saw it as well. It was AMAZINGLY well done!

And if that's wrong, then so is corporate graffiti. New Yorkers like their Proctor Silex toaster-looking cars to look "industrial", not gaudy. :)

As to the tube stock, VERY impressive! The jungle train was laid out in a similar style across all ten cars, each with its own animal set out in the jungle setting. The lion and zebra cars were particularly stunning.

I have that center spread. The bottom said something like "since these pictures were taken, these trains have been defaced by the MTA" meaning, they went through the acid wash.
