The Newest Additions - R36WF cars 9586-9587 |
|
Posted by Mysterious Friday 1986 on Fri May 16 21:35:05 2014 I decided to sneak into the Transit Museum during lunch time to catch a glimpse of these cars. Here are R36WF cars 9586 and 9587, which made their debut midway this week.A brief history - These cars in particular are special for two reasons: this pair was one of the first R36WF cars to be overhauled and then painted in the red paint scheme we know today as the Redbirds back in 1984. This pair then became cars #11 and cars #10, respectively on the last Redbird run on the (7) line, which took place on November 3, 2003. The cars spent a great amount of time at Unionport Yard in the Bronx shortly afterwards, being used on a number of occasions as part of the Rail Adhesion Train in the fall. They were given a repaint in 2008 from the Coney Island Yard Shops, which overtime, the paint used faded and turned the cars into some weird light pink / orange color. Since about 2011 or so, the cars were then placed in storage. In July 2013, the pair was transferred to Concourse Yard, joining R26 cars 7774-7775, R28s 7924-7925, and R29s 8678-8679. This pair was hooked to the R26 pair for a while. In September of that year, 9586-9587 were transferred to 207th Street Yard, moved by the TOMC R33ML cars. Over the next months, the cars received body work and another repaint, all which was completed just last month. And here we are to today. The cars sit where the R33WF car, 9306, sat previously. Enough blabbering, now the photos: Car 9586 (the only car of the two that was open to the public) ![]() ![]() Picture Windows on 9586 ![]() Interior of 9586 ![]() January 2003 Subway Map ![]() Rollsign ![]() A peek into car 9587. ![]() And now for some advertisements... ![]() The 2003 Open Competitive Exam Schedule ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's where it gets interesting. The storm door could've used a touch-up. But nevertheless interesting as it exposed a bit of its original color scheme. The whole interior of the car was largely untouched since retirement.Found it funny that ar 9587 still has Bud Light ads. |

Great pictures of great cars. Thanks for sharing. When the R 62a started to show up on the Flushing Line, I was a once a week rider there & I did a little unofficial comparing. The R-36 was peppier, smoother riding & MUCH smother braking than the R-62a s. R-36 was much brighter with its interior lighting. The 62a s seem to bog down quite noticeably on the Steinway hill comming into Vernon Jackson with a rush hr load. The Flushing Line is not an easy run. With its sharp curves, steep grades & track that always seemed to be in rough shape, the R-33/36s seemed to get it done, quite easily. Till the end, they were good runners. It was the bodyrot that did them in. The R-33 & R-36WF cars..St Louis Car's finest product & Coney Island & Morrison Knudson finest rebuilds! IMO of course. |

It was quite nostalgic for me; the last time I was ever on an R36WF car was on August 1, 2003 on my way to Times Square to see a movie. It was a very short ride, but the train rode very well. |
