Could one wheel have been derailed going over the switches beyond Roosevelt Ave & not causing further damage until it got beyond 65th St.?? Some passengers report serious bumping before the train stopped. Indicating possibly a wheel bouncing off the crossties. Strictly speculation here.
Can a subway train travel that far, say from Roosevelt Ave to 62nd st with one wheel on the ground?

If memory serves, train are going at a very good clip beyond 65th St on the express tracks entering the dip turning under Northern Blvd.
All in all, it could have been a lot worse.

The MTA expects to restore local E, F service along the Queens Boulevard line at approximately 1 p.m. following a train derailment near 65 St on Friday and overnight service suspension for repairs. Express service in both directions on the lines remains suspended.

All train service was suspended along the Queens Boulevard line to allow crews to remove four cars on the eight-car incident train. Shuttle bus service was available for customers at the affected stops between Queens Plaza and Forest Hills-71 St and between 21 St-Queensbridge and Forest Hills-71 St.

Work to repair tracks will extend into early Monday with the goal of restoring full normal service on all four affected lines in time for the morning commute. Local service on the E, F will be suspended at 10 p.m. Saturday until approximately 10 a.m. Sunday to remove the remaining cars and to complete repairs on significant stretches of track. Shuttle buses will be provided for overnight customers along the Queens Boulevard line.

R trains are running between Whitehall St and 57 St-7 Av in Manhattan. 7, J, M Weekend construction work on the lines has been canceled.

MTA Long Island Rail Road is cross-honoring valid MetroCards between Penn Station and Jamaica Station.

Please allow for additional travel time on the affected subway lines and higher volume of customers on the LIRR.

MTA New York City Transit is investigating the cause of the derailment. The section of rail in question is stamped with markings indicating it was manufactured in the United States in November 2013, and a preliminary canvass of maintenance records shows it was installed in March 2014. The rail will be sent for metallurgical testing as part of the investigation.

MTA NYCT has an aggressive program to fix and prevent broken rails along its 660 miles of mainline track. Track workers walk every inch of the subway system twice a week looking for flaws, and specialized rail cars scan the rails to find hidden flaws every other month. While every rail system experiences occasional rail breaks, the MTA’s continuous goal is to reduce them as much as possible.

The results of this effort are clear: The New York City subway system, which carries 1.7 billion customers per year and runs 8,000 trains each weekday, has experienced only 17 mainline derailments in the last decade.

Federal Transit Administration figures show that while the MTA’s subway system is far larger than any other in the United States, in most years its derailment rate is less than half the national average. This record is impressive, and the MTA’s goal is to reduce that number to zero.

As part of that effort, the MTA maps the location of broken rails and other rail defects to identify where a large-scale replacement project would have the greatest impact. The results were presented in February to the MTA Board’s Capital Program Oversight Committee.

They showed five corridors, including the E, F, M, R line through Queens where Friday’s derailment occurred, where the largest number of breaks occurred. The MTA has developed plans to install 23 miles of continuous welded rail in those sections to reduce breaks, improve track conditions and reduce noise and vibration levels.

The MTA has a safe subway system, and is using sophisticated data analysis and the capital planning process to make its rails even safer.

The F train that derailed in Queens on Friday exposed the dangers of failure-prone tracks and the need to expedite a planned replacement program that is at least a year away.

The train, carrying about 1,000 people, broke free of the rails on an express track near the local station at Broadway and 65th St. in Woodside. The area falls within one of five zones the MTA has deemed “critical rail break” corridors and slated for future replacement.

The Queens trouble zone, along the Queens Blvd. line between 50th St. and 71st St./Continental Ave. in Forest Hills, had 205 broken rails between 2005 and 2012 — the second-highest concentration during that period of any part of the subway system.

The Queens sector and four others were selected for a multimillion-dollar project to replace rails and weld them together for greater strength, but the project won’t begin until 2015, at the earliest. Rails in the Queens corridor, and throughout the vast majority of the system’s 659 miles of track, are bolted and fastened together, not welded.

The so-called “continuous-welded-rail” initiative is planned as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s next capital plan, which has not been funded by the state or the federal government.

The derailment, which injured 19 people but did not result in any deaths, was under investigation Friday, but MTA probers quickly determined that a defective rail might have been to blame.

Advocates told the Daily News that the riding public must now worry about whether Friday’s hell ride was a harbinger of things to come.

“You have got to ask about this near rush-hour derailment on one of the busiest lines in the subways: Are transit officials replacing track fast enough and in the right places?” said Gene Russianoff, executive director of the Straphangers Campaign, an advocacy group. “We look to the national and state safety monitors to get us independent answers.”

MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast, speaking at a press conference at the site, promised a “complete and thorough investigation.” He said the train derailed on track that was laid in the 1930s or 1940s and had been replaced “no more than 20 or 30 years ago, if that.”

Subway derailments were all-too-common back in the 1980s — there were 20 in 1980 alone — but there was only one last year and just six since 2010, according to MTA records. That is due in part to transit workers who walk tracks daily to look for rail breaks or defects, officials said.

Since 1984, the agency has reconstructed and replaced 372 miles of “mainline” track — an average of about 18 miles a year, according to MTA data. But at the same time, the pace of track replacement has slowed recently compared to what it was in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Over the 10 years from the late 1980s to 1990s, the average dropped to 9 miles per year. And in the 10-year period running through this year, the yearly average has been 10 miles.

State Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) said derailments are “completely unacceptable.”

“This type of malfunction cannot be tolerated,” he said. “Every New Yorker should feel safe on the subway.”

The Manhattan-bound F train derailed at 10:24 a.m. along a straightaway that follows a long, sweeping curve that trains enter after a downhill run, transit sources said. The curve has a speed limit of 35 mph.

Prendergast did not say how fast the train was going.

The motorman, a 31-year veteran, was heard telling the paramedics treating him that it felt like the tracks broke just before the train derailed, sources said.

Riders had little warning.

“Suddenly I felt shaking. I was in the first car. I could feel the train behind me go off its tracks. It tilted left too much,” said Robin Henaw, 22, who was commuting to work in Manhattan.

“You could just feel yourself coming off your seat,” added Irvelle Cadet, 24, who was on her way to a job interview from her home in Jamaica. “I was sideways at one point. Then the conductor came over the speakers to say it derailed.”

The first and last of the train’s eight cars managed to stay on the tracks. The others wobbled and screeched and smashed to a halt, destroying a section of track about 500 feet long, including the electrified third rail. Steel girders bent from impact with train cars.

Riders were left in the dark. Some had panic attacks.

“It was crazy,” added Henaw. “The lights turned off and there were sparks from outside. Everyone was worried about flames. The smoke was pretty heavy. People were handing out tissues. It looked like some people were passing out because of the smoke.”

Emergency responders cut power to the tracks and herded passengers out of the cars, then directed them up ladders to an escape hatch leading to street level.

Passengers described the evacuation as orderly and well-coordinated. “It didn’t take them long to get us help. It was probably 15 to 20 minutes before the conductor said that firefighters were in the tunnel. He also kept coming over to tell us to remain calm, that help was on its way,” said Cadet.

“Firefighters brought pregnant women, older people and children off first,” she added.

The train’s conductor and train operator were praised by police and firefighters for keeping their cool and assisting in the evacuation, said Paul Navarro, track division chairman with Transport Workers Union Local 100.

Ten victims were admitted to Elmhurst Hospital Center, said spokeswoman Atiya Butler. None sustained major injury, she said. The others were treated at the scene for bumps and bruises.

Express train service on the Queens Blvd. line will be suspended until the damaged train is removed — a challenge because what’s left of the tracks is useless.

“It’ll take us a while,” Prendergast said.

I'm not. There wasn't any track underneath the train to re rail it.

You have to jack it up car by car and install track and fasten it good enough that it can support the weight of the train.

You have to support the cars so the men can safely work underneath.

We want ZERO employee injuries throughout this process.

NYC subway rail that snapped in derailment was new

By Jonathan Lemire
May 3, 2014 1:21 PM EDT
The subway rail that snapped and caused a train to derail, injuring 19 passengers and stranding hundreds underground, was installed just weeks before the accident, the Metropolitan Transit Authority said Saturday.

The rail that broke underneath a train in Queens on Friday morning was manufactured in the U.S. in November and installed in March. The other rails from that shipment will be tracked down and inspected, according to the MTA.

The cause of the derailment, the most significant in years on the nation's largest subway system, remains under investigation.

The express F train was heading for Manhattan and Brooklyn when six of its eight cars derailed around 10:30 a.m. more than 1,000 feet from the nearest station. The train was plunged into darkness, and sparks and smoke partially filled some of the cars.

Four people suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized after the derailment, which took place about 30 feet below street level. Fifteen other straphangers, some of whom complained of chest pains, were treated at the scene.

Dozens of emergency workers converged quickly on the scene, some of whom used ladders to help passengers descend from the train to track level and guided them along the track to an opening in the sidewalk. Power was cut to the third rail to aid the rescue.

MTA workers are repairing a damaged 500-foot stretch of rail and aim to have local service restored by Saturday afternoon. Officials hope to restore full service by Monday morning's rush hour.

The area where the incident occurred is one of the five zones the MTA has identified as "critical rail break" corridors that need replacement, according to The New York Daily News. However, because the age of the rail does not appear to be a factor, MTA investigators will focus on other areas while trying to determine what caused the derailment.

There is no signal switch in the area. The train's operator and conductor were tested for drugs and alcohol, but results were not immediately known.
