Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Sun Dec 1 08:56:20 2013 Shot from my TV, CBS 2 NEWS.......CBS TV, Jannelle Burrell shot these and videoed this scene, taken from the Henry Hudson Parkway..... Cab Car #6222 literally almost ended up in the Harlem River!!! :-( Wide shot, as the wreck encompasses DV Junction, the old DV Tower at the upper right, Spuyten Duyvil Station on the lower right, and across the top is Amtrak's Empire Line Of course, more is indeed to come from this story!! My prayers and heart goes out to the passengers and coworkers who were aboard this train, may all be okay and no one be seriously injured!! :-( |

Crazy! Usually the speed there is relatively slow, too. I hope confusion and a few bumps and bruises is the worst of it.If I were on the train I guess I'd have been about as ok as the engineer - I usually sit on the left side at the back of the first window of the first car, when on POU-GCT trains. |

Yes, my initial reaction was that the switch must have tried to send the right-hand wheels to Penn Station for the train to end up so spectacularly derailed, but it seems an awful long way back. |

So even if the switch (about 2000 feet north of the curve) is set up to route trains to NYP, the fact that there is a train on a track that is inaccessible based on the way the switch is set, it still causes a red signal? I suppose that could be, though I don't see why it would be. |

From the pictures, it seems to me that the train was on the center track -- which would mean damage to both the center and southern track.I'd expect longer than usual amounts of time in this case -- this isn't a run-of-the-mill picking a switch. That train had to have been moving way faster than it was supposed to be. Why it was moving that fast remains to be seen -- but a train running at track speed doesn't end up on the waters edge after derailing. |

Appreciate that, which makes it all the more difficult to comprehend how the lead car ended up at the waters edge.At 30 MPH, crossing another railroad track and then making its way through brush and trees to get to the waters edge seems damned near impossible. |

Multiple sources quote the engineer as saying he applied the brakes but they didn't work. If true, it could be some pretty catastrophic (and probably theoretically impossible) equipment failure. There's also the speculation about wet leaves. |

I could also believe operator inattention (as we saw in Spain). There have been wet leaves on the tracks since the beginning of time. No train has ever ended up at the water's edge before. It ain't wet leaves. |

I have have often sat all the way in front of MNRR trains and heard beeping noises to signal the approach of a lower speed zone. Someone else could confirm if that applies on diesel trains being pushed too. But operator inattention seems unlikely if that signaling is also on diesels. |
