PHOTOS: Tri-Rail Thursday

I arrived at the Fort Lauderdale Amtrak/Tri-Rail station at noon to photograph the two Tri-Rail trains at 12:08 and 12:09 prior to photographing Amtrak train 92 Silver Star at 12:30.

train P623

train P622

When the Silver Star failed to appear, I called Julie and discovered that train 92 had departed one hour earlier than the timetable schedule because of CSX track work. My disappointment paled into insignificance compared with that of the dozen-plus passengers with luggage waiting on the platform.

Come now, you really expected the people to actually LOOK, and READ, anything posted, be it a sign, an email alert, text alert or anything?? Don't you realize if it is a function a person has to do (like usage of basic eyesight, reading comprehension, or listening to announcements or audible media) that does NOT require an "app", NO ONE knows how to do it anymore???

Forgot to say, nice shots!!! I definitely need to line up another FL trip!! Favorite state in the whole Union, sun, fun, palm trees, etc (I would say fine women too, but my wife would kick my @$$ and ban me from ever traveling there, even though we got family in Central FL!! :-D). And with all that, enough trains in the middle of it all!!! :-)

Paul, I would agree except that people still acted like helpless lost puppies back when I started in 1998, way before the internet and smartphones became the "norm" in society...

First of all, the times listed on the booking page are the scheduled times, not the modified times even now. There's a "service alert" popup that links to the notice but that wouldn't have been present if you booked far enough in advance, which most people do.

On the main page of amtrak.com there's no obvious notice of the disruption; someone checking the site in advance of travel would have to click the small "service disruptions" link under the "riders guide" header which doesn't give any obvious indication that it should be clicked.

We don't know how thoroughly Amtrak called or emailed people to notify them about the disruption; sometimes they call every passenger, sometimes they don't. But absent a fairly thorough attempt to call and notify people, it would require more than "basic eyesight, reading comprehension," etc to know about this and prepare for it.

PS— I'm baffled as to the suggestion that notification through an "app" would be universally effective in a way that calling, emailing, or putting an obvious notification on their website would not. Not everybody has a smartphone and those that do don't indiscriminately install every app available. I have a smartphone but I would never install Amtrak's app on it; there's nothing the app does that I can't do on their website and so installing the app would be a flagrant violation of basic security rules.

I would think people who are reserved on a scheduled train should, in the least be called and notified prior.

I think you missed, though, what I was getting at in regard to the "app" thing. I meant that in terms of the people of the world in general in everything period. With how technology basically dictates peoples lives, it's like people, if they have to do something which does not require an app or technology to do (i.e. basic common sense, usage of the human brain and its basic abilities, functions and senses, good judgement, etc. etc. etc.), no one seems to have any clue what to do!!!

I ALWAYS put my cell number on my reservation b4 I get my tix. AMTK has called me once or twice to advise me of a sched change. If you made the reservation via 800 USA RAIL the agent will always ask for your cell number. At least they should. and on an over nighter I always arrive 90 mins before depature. if you have a sleeper you want to make sure the station person on duty tells you where to board.
