Posted by chuchubob on Tue Nov 27 16:49:45 2012 Amtrak leased a dozen cars from VIA Canada to augment their passenger car fleet during Thanksgiving week, reportedly to compensate for the anticipated inability of NJ Transit to furnish the usual two sets of Arrow III emu's for Thanksgiving Sunday as a result of damage experienced from Superstorm Sandy. As it worked out, Transit came through, and Amtrak used the cars from the two Adirondak trainsets to augment their Northeast Corridor trains. The VIA cars were used on trains 68 and 69 Adirondak between Montreal and Rensselaer only, since low hanging equipment would not have cleared the third rail between Poughkeepsie and NYP.When Tuesday (today) was announced as the last day for VIA equipment, I booked train 69 to Port Henry and train 68 back. P32AC-DM 712 and 716 took the Amfleet consist from NYP to ALB.   P42DC 43 took the VIA consist from Rensselaer to Montreal.  The VIA cars were four HEP 1 cars, one HEP 2 car, and one Park Series dome. Tweedsmuir Park     HEP 2 cars are a step above HEP 1 cars: HEP car 4121   outside Albany  Schenectady  Saratoga Springs  near Whitehall  departing Port Henry   train 68 arriving with Evangeline Park

Oh well, I doubt anything would be visible under the blue paint anyway. Few years ago, I saw an Amtrak baggage car still faintly lettered "SANTA FE" if the light caught it at the right angle, and ever since then I've always checked.Nice seeing you too. I lost track of everyone after Albany; I didn't have time to walk around on the platform and the Amtubes were so packed I didn't want to try walking around. |

One of the pictures shows a gutted car shell on jacks, stripped and cleaned ready for its new interior, it doesn’t even have windows or any underbody equipment. If it wasn’t for a touch of pressure wash rust on the drawbar hanger you’d think the shot was at Red Lion, Pointe St Charles’s paint and tarnish removal was that thorough. The shot also puts a feather in Budd’s cap that under any paint and dirt, their stainless still looks brand new after 50 years.I assume you already know that VIA HEP-1 8140 was Amtrak 5420, nee RF&P 801. Some railfan from Newport News grabbed my phone to look when I told him that car was ex-RF&P.I guess I'll keep checking for lettering on Amtrak heritage cars but VIA sounds like a lost cause. |
