Disney for use in a movie.A Will Smith movie IIRC. The point is Willie was restored TOTALLY with private money. We as fans were fortunate to have this engine in staem as long as we did, but it is apparently over, at leat for the time being. To expect the taxpayer to perpetuate this is absurd. It is how we got into the position we now find ourselves in. |

Expecting the taxpayer to foot the bill is where I got the problem. Little story: When I did restoration for Reading Tech I both paid for the parts & donated my labor & skills (I am a certified instructor in cabinetmaking & millwork but do not teach). At each meeting an old caboose coal bucket was passed around the room for donations. I tossed my material receipts in. And NO, I did not claim any of those receipts on my taxes as some kind of "donation". To me THAT is the way it is done. |

You, sir, brought up the general budget mess in an oblique way. My parents worked for those crooks so I grew up with regular tales of waste back in Ike's time. It has only gotten worse. In any event, the point is that the sum of money is tiny. As a taxpayer, I have as much (and no more) right than you to an opinion as to how our taxes should be spent. I favor trains/transit. Without intending to make dan lawrence look ridiculous again, I'm wondering what funding dan is suggesting that Mitt Romney would cut off. According to the 2011 Annual Report of the B&O RR Museum, they receive money from the state of Maryland but no money from the federal government. In addition, the last time they received federal money was from the Bush Administration in 2003, in the form of a $500,000 grant, to repair the collapsed roof. So I realize that it once again goes without saying but |

It doesn't burn fuel but stores steam supplied from an external source such as a power plant. That's why it has such a large insulated boiler. Consequently it can travel only a short distance from the source of steam. It was used for switching operations. |

As many others including Robert Reich have pointed out the so-called SS/Medicare funding crisis is soluble by raising the ceiling on income subject to FICA. Problem solved. As to most of the rest of the deficit, eliminatibng the money pit operations in Iraq and Afghanistan all of which were "off budget" but ballooned the deficit, will go a long way. Increasing the base tax rate on the overly rich will clean up the rest along with going after the profits hidden off shore by treasonous corporations. Politically difficult mathematically simple. In the grand scheme of things, spending on infrastructure and historic preservation/civic improvement is a far better allocation of funds. |
