LACMTA to rename lines soon and various other Los Angeles info

Because both the new Expo line and the Blue line are shades of blue Metro decided to help distinguish which line is which by adding an "E" for Expo to the Expo bullet. Click on the photo below for more photos.

I went to a Transit Coalition meeting yesterday at Metro headquarters that had Metro's Bruce Shelburne (Scheduling/Service) as the featured speaker. He said that Metro will soon be renaming all of the lines and replacing the names with colors. He also said that despite the new "E" bullet, that the lines would likely be named A,B,C,D,...in order of when the lines opened.

Interestingly, he thinks that 24-hour train service in the not too distant future is a possibility. It would be 20-30 minutes late night depending on the line because given the limited number of crossovers, that's all that the lines can run with one track closed for maintenance.

When completed the purple line extension will run 15 tph peak service and the red line will have the same headway, which means 30 tph on the trunk. He thinks that the purple line will be the busiest rapid transit line in the US outside of NYC and worries that 15 tph will be insufficient to meet demand. Unfortunately that will be the max that can ever be run on that line.

I already posted last week that trains on all lines will run later on Friday and Saturday. That starts in two days.

Schedule adjustments planned for the next few months include running the gold line every 10 minutes until close (to match the blue/red/purple lines) and running more trains on weekends on all lines. Currently the standard on weekends is 5 tph. The new standard will be 8 tph.

I wonder if the NYCTA lawyers are eagerly watching with baited breath to to see the LAMTA copies any of their symbols. With probably not too much work to do at TA HQ, they've probably already prepared the papers and are just waiting to fill in the blanks. Lester is probably already foaming at the mouth, maybe staying awake nights or experiencing anticipatory orgasms.....

No fucking way the NYCTA will sue another transit agency for swiping their symbols. If they moan about it, then LACMTA will use another shape like triangles, squares, Pentagons, etc. In fact, SFMTA uses bullets for their light rail system.

If that thinking was prevalent, then the MBTA should sue every transit agency in the USA and Canada for ripping off their way of identifying subway lines [by color] since they pioneered it in the 1960's, not to mention Metro Transit in Minneapolis for using the T logo.

I know right? Bad enough that they stole the agency name from (NY) MTA, then the depot patches (notice on the Division 2 one, they actually wrote "Crossroads Depot", even though MTA (and RTD before them) has always referred to the yards as "divisions". I was SMDH when I first saw those. With the latest liveries (Metro Local/Express/Rapid), they seemed to have gotten away from putting the patches on the buses, maybe the few still in the previous livery (yellowjacket) might still wear them.

Actually, the Boston MBTA could sue the NY MTA for copyright infringement since it was the first transit agency to use the acronym "MTA." By the way, here in Bay Ridge, Bkln, the local merchants' association the Merchants of Third Avenue also uses MTA as its official acronym and I haven't heard of any pending lawsuits yet.
