no,the coal spur was on a trestle apx.10 feet off the ground.it was removed apx.5 tears ago.I took vincent seyfried there about 15 years ago so that he could photograph it.in the middle 1950`s I saw a RS3 crossing under the CIP headed e/b to the mainline at floral pk.

The car shortage notwithstanding, the only el with access to the Bkln Br that could accommodate 10 ft wide cars was Fulton St and since the portion west of Nostrand could not support steel cars, neither the D types nor the ABs could even get to the Bkln Br.

I doubt that would have happened since the ancestor of the FRA, the ICC had similar regulations to the current FRA and would probably not have permitted the IND to share the E River tunnels with PRR trains coming into Penn Sta from Sunnyside Yd.

The station shell crosses Fulton something other than an absolute right angle but I'm not sure of the degrees of the angle it crosses at. What I did notice when I was in there is that the columns in the center of the platforms that hold up the roof of the station do not match the alignment of the Utica subway but actually match the alignment of the Fulton St subway below. Also, when I was in there in 1983 there were openings in the platforms with steep ramps that were intended to have stairway steps installed and since Structure Dept was doing work in there at the time they had wooden barricades around them to keep employees from falling down and the area was well lit. If at some point, anyone had gone in there at some other time when there was no lighting and no barricades, they might have fallen down the stairway spaces and nobody would have known they were there until the time when the sealed up stairways on the lower level platforms were removed. I have heard that since the stairway infrastructures on the lower level have been removed, the stairway cutouts on the upper level platforms have been sealed.

When George Abere and I were in there in 1963, the roadbed was type 1 which is what the IND used to install on non revenue track at the time.

The infrastructures for K5 and K6 were always there since at the time that portion of the line was built it was intended to have both a subway continuing down Pitkin Av and the branch to Grant and the Fulton St el.

I've seen them, but not up close. A few years ago, I was standing at the south end of the Chambers Street BMT stop and was looking into the stub end tunnel. I saw a yellow bulb in the distance near the tall ceiling in the distance, illuminating some kind of partially built overpass. I posted a question on SubChat as to what that was and someone answered that it was the approach to the Brooklyn Bridge that was never completed.

Is this within the realm of possibility?
Could the two tunnels that would have led to the BKLN bridge be redirected to the Lower Level of the BMT Broadway City Hall station, making huge loop around?
If so, this may have potential for future S A S service.

They are ramps leading up to the bridge,not down.You will never see rails on the brooklyn bridge again.so I know its not feasable.will somebody tell me what the difference is between type 1&type 2 subway construction so that I can clarify a previous post on 76st.thanks.

Based on information found on the Internet, proposed IND expansion into southern Queens via the present Fulton Line included a dual transportation feed geographically east of Euclid. Reuse of the present in use Dual Contract Liberty Avenue elevated structure, and a subway route with a connection to the LIRR RoW.

Tunnel construction method employed south of Euclid does not show the added on construction features found in most post 1940 IND/BMT interconnections. Instead, tunnel structural construction at the point where tracks K1 & K2 rise, and turn geographically north east towards Grant Avenue appears integrated to the total design of the main line tunnel structure that ends in the vicinity of survey marker 412+00.

This also explains the high roof and wide width subway tunnel construction south of the two K track ramps, and anticipates the decent and meeting point of yard leads A7 & A8 at a point north of the proposed 74th Street station. The model board at Euclid displays a run away bumper block at the end of track A7 to suggest a descending ramp. Just as it shows the same for track K2.

This will then highly suggest that yard lead tracks K5/K6 & A7/A8 were constructed at or about the same time, with A7 & A8 turning due east to meet the never built main line and at what should be a grade crossing at a point where tracks K5 & K6 begin.

This also explains the home signal A7 facing south, shown on the LVT Squad's web photo, that protecting movement to a switch at K5, and that has raised questions that fuel the speculation of an IND station at 74th Street.

I know of a change to the K chaining code change on K6 at 41250/000 that must place it at or about the A7/8 junction. Hence the A7 home signal's designation of A7 2 at marker location 2+00.

Our house in Babylon had cinder block walls and my dad poured sand into the cinder blocks for insulation, so I guess the very same method has been used here, makes it almost impossible to look through this wall then.

Service ended at Rockaway Ave, but construction continued eastward up to January 1942, when all major civilian construction projects were suspended so we could gear up for war production. By that time the tunnel under Pitkin to Euclid was pretty much done. They had to wait until 1945 to re-start construction, which first allowed the line to be extended to ENY in 1946 and Euclid in 1948.

As for the alignment choice, I think the city wanted to maintain pressure on the BMT by directly competing with the entire Fulton St. line.

No,thanks for the info.in reply to an earlier post on tracks A7/8 by handbrake,its type 1 construction heading towards 76st,not type 2 as I had previously posted.The cop who was in there said he&his partner walked the ballast roadbed,no tracks or ties left.upon reaching the platform the 4 track ROW was type 2.tunnels go beyound 76st both n/b& s/b

Type 1 is old school railroad track construction with conventional cross ties. Type 2/modified Type 2 track utilizes short ties embedded in concrete with an trough that runs down the middle for irrigation. This is typical of all IND main line track, and dual contract track construction originally found only in subway stations, and a few elevated locations.

Modified Type 2 is the same, as Type 1, with exception to a full length tie at every third rail rail surface insulator. Modified Type 2 is the most prevalent of Type 2 track construction used by NYCT where subway Type 1 track has been replaced.

When the IND was being built, it was decided to use Type 2 track construction throughout the main line system. Exceptions would be on non revenue tracks that could use Type 1.

yes,the tunnels go to 79st&pitkin as well as to grant[elderts lane]& pitkin.this has been posted many times before.contrary to what has been posted that track A1 continued upto,but not into 76st.no track was ever laid beyound the bumper block.there is no roadbed laid beyound the b/b.there is apx.18inches from the b/b to the roadbed with no signs of anything ever have being built or removed.

I seriously doubt it, unless the two cops were either chasing out vagrants, in hot pursuit, railroad buffs, or looking for a place to "coop" for the night, I some how can't buy what was allegedly observed underground geographically due east of Euclid.

The subway bulkhead end of tunnel wall at the present main line att 412+00 does not jive with the information mentioned. That would infer that a underground structure as wide as 6 track, narrowing to 4 track ways would have been built with the only access to the 4 track segment via yard leads A7/8.

One question that I would pose to the two NY Finest who claim as having been in what is interpreted as the 76th Street station is; did you enter the tunnel at Pitkin yard (Or Grant Avenue), and do you recall descending down a single track ramp prior to entering a wider subway tunnel, and station east of Euclid?

There's nothing too exotic about the Fulton Street station shell on the Utica Avenue line. I believe pictures of the same were once posted on a web site a few years ago.

The Fulton Street station shell is similar to the S4th Street station shell photos posted on the web.

The rather large station interiors of the Utica Avenue station did not result in the station shell space being reused for some other NYCT activity, as is the case at 2nd Avenue/Houston, where crew quarters were built in the physical space of the partly built 2nd Avenue line Houston Street station shell.

The new 2nd Avenue Line is planned to tunnel under the existing 2nd Ave /Houston Street station. Keeping the old V line crew room toilets safely in place for now.

this has been posted many times in the past.wayne drumond was cop#1,joe pecoraro was cop#2 both of the 7-5 pct.while working a slow 4 to 12 they were driving down fulton st.wayne pointed out the former chestnut st.conn.into the lirr.Joe,a former transit cop who worked dist.33 ENY.said i,m going to show you one better.they drove into pitkin yd.went into the tower& got a set of keys from the yardmaster.they walked into the hole.upon reaching the cinder block wall joe opened a structure door in the wall&took wayne into the tunnel leading to 76st.he described the station as a completed full shell with blue tiling on the wall,center entrance.this is queens bound.the bklyn.bound side was a partial shell.walking to the queens end on the platform they found the tunnel continued beyound the platform.they did not venture beyound the station.the tunnel towards grant ave.was described,as well towards 79st as type 2 construction.I was a cop in dist.33 from 1968 to 69.to bad I never thought to ask any other cops about this. I switched to the city police in 1969& was assigned to the 7-5.I worked with both of these guys& never knew of their intrest in trains,talk about oppertunity lost.wayne is president of the L.I.chapter of the NHRR historical society.with a little effort you can reach out to him on line.joe,the last I heard was a dentist on LI.

there was no station shell built at 2nd ave..just a large,empty space.

Platforms were not built, but the space you make mention was for the 2nd Avenue line station at Houston.

Next time at 2nd Avenue, look for the five square blank spots in the ceiling, and the 45 degree angled staircase out cropping on the platform side of track B2 that signifies where the stairway to the 2nd Avenue line station would have been.

How much of the shell was built, I do not know, but space was created for it in advance.
