Last night at work me and my co worker went into the shell of the upper level utica ave station. The shell is very Wide and about 300 feet long. Its very dark and clean. The only way to access it is from the closed mezz on the lower level.

Yes its on the lower level of the mezz near the utica side. Once you go through the door on the utica ave mezz, walk up the ramp in the mezz, and you're gonna see a staircase that goes to a lower mezz in the closed off area. The Door is behind a chainlink fence and when u go in the station whe wall ends at the SB trackwall on the A line but continues north past the station wall on the Manhattan A track. There are 4 trackways and 2 island plats I did not see any mile posts in the shell but its just missing tiles and tracks.

I've never seen any documentation of this. In fact, the future of the Jamaica Ave el in the IND expansion plans is a bit of a mystery. Clearly it was intended to be kept, since it was originally going to be extended to 180th St, but most of the Broadway el was obviously going to be replaced by new subways. I've read one plan about it being connected to the Canarsie line, but even that was short on specifics.

Many of the original IND plans were extremely fluid. I have a copy of plans for the IND subway in Bkln which calls for it to continue straight down Fulton St to the Queens line and access the Fulton St el at 80 St from the north rather than from the south as it does now since the subway would not have been under Pitkin Av. As I said in many of my posts, I think that the main reason that the IND terminated at Rockaway Av for so long was that prior to unification, the route of the subway beyond that point had not been finalized. Once unification took place, the city was able to determine what it wanted to do since it was no longer really in direct competition with the BMT so the routes were reconfigured to blend with existing services rather than compete with them.

Tunnel, don't claim that. I don't post a lot but I can claim to hanging out in that part of the Utica Ave station when I was a kid back in the sixties. I lived up the street from the station at the time and a couple of partners and me made that our spot when we found out about it - and the cops wouldn't even chase you in there.

maybe 200 feet.if you go to the end of chambers st,downtown bound you will see a ramp, about 100 feet past the station look up&you will see a partial wall, thats the tunnel leading to the bridge tracks.it was built in 1910 by the dept.of bridges, not the brt.the wine cellar was featured on secrets of new york& photos posted here.its the storage space under the bklyn. bridge that was a wine cellar.I,ve seen photos of the bridge conn.showing both n/b& s/b cuts looking into&out of the tunnels.I,m probably one of the few rail buffs in the world[not kidding]that has seen them.

do you have knowledge of a partial subway built south of atlantic ave.on utica.about 10 or longer years ago I was on the street exploring that possibilty as I had heard of such construction. An old white man came upto me& asked what I was doing.having told him,he told me he had grown up in the area&remembers subway construction s/o atlantic,I haven`t found any proof of this.it makes for an interesting story.also about the same time I was in astoria around 34ave,iirc doing the same thing.I had heard that an ind tunnel was built from astoria to roosevelt island, part of the 2nd ave.subway.same thing happened,an old guy comes up& asks what i,m looking for&relates to me he saw subway construction headed towards the east river.when I was a cop the 6-9 precient had a shooting range in the basement.while talking to another cop about my passion for unknown tunnels the range officer interupted the conversation& said the tunnel was built&the nypd stores ammo there.I can neither confirm or deny these locations.

I knew about the UTICA AVE SUBWAY work south of Atlantic! Like You..a older gentleman friend of my father mentioned to me a long time ago around after i was talking to my mom about my trip to the TRANSIT EXHIBIT in 76'.

He said he was living on DEAN st st the time..and watch them tear up the street to build the tunnel..
I even asked you guys sometime ago on SUBTALK about it!

I also caught wind of the subway tunnel along Broadway/Steinway[Queens]..from a C/R years ago at Queensbridge.

The reason the Fulton subway ended at Rockaway Ave so long is because while the Broadway-East New York (Junction) station was already built and tiled, WWII rationing kept metal from being able to be installed for the signalling and the tracks east of Rockaway. If they had the metal, they could have at least terminated at Bway Junction. The Shells for Liberty, Shepard, Van Siclen and Euclid were also begun vefore construction stopped because of the war.

Those photos probably did exist at one time. I read somewhere that many years ago, the LIRR was doing some "house cleaning" and many glass plate negatives were thrown out.

Think of all that history that was destroyed by those who thought it was clutter or old stuff.

right..the engineering/design portion of the route was completed by the early 70's..along with the Canarsie Relocation route to Flatbush/Nostrand Junction to the south..and across the border to Queens to the east.

One issue..is the Canarsie lines was dependent of a proposed expressway along the same ROW..[Cross Brooklyn Expressway,a ROBERT MOSES PRODUCTION].As the property owners along the routing fought tooth an nail to keep their homes..somehow the MTA decided that there was no way this line could be built with the PRESENT amount of funding,WITHOUT the Expressway[FED FUNDS was building the whole thing subway/roadway ON PARTIAL ELEVATED DECKING]..No EXPRESSWAY..NO SUBWAY.

The Utica subway fell to the SAS folly..FEDS getting cold feet due to shens...City deciding to DEFFER the work "until a later date, when funding become available.."
No only did this route kick the bucket..the entire new routes plan died due to "shens"..and a failing city finance base.

what we did finally get..with 20 years worth of work..wasn't worth the expense paid for it.

A compromise route would have brought the IRT Nostrand Avenue line down Flatbush Avenue to Avenue U, near present Kings Plaza. However Brooklyn politicians wanted both the Utica Avenue route, and an extension of the IRT Nostrand line down Nostrand towards Emmons avenue in Sheepshead Bay.

Brooklyn Politico's feared that the modified Flatbush route would cause the Utica Avenue route to not get built. Well neither was built, and the surface transit mess at Flatbush terminal continues.

WWII couldn't have been the reason since the line was ended at Rocky Av in 1936 long before the war even started in Europe. Once unification was achieved in 1940, work on the present route started but WWII only stopped it when the US got involved in WWII in December 1941.

back in 1964 when I hired on to the t.a.I worked out of 207st yard as a supply truck driver, signal dept.the maintainer who was in charge of me was an old timer,at least 30 years on.I asked him about all the portals I saw around the system&what,if any thing was behind them.he`s the one who told me about 76st.he worked pitkin yard when it first opened& was in 76st when they did long relays from the yard.he described it as the other people who had been in it over the years.anyway,to make a long story longer all of his info was correct.IE there`s tunnel beyound the wall, there`s nothing beyound the wall.he is the main source for much of my tunnel knowledge that has proven to be true.when he worked the road his helper was also a tunnel buff who did his own exploring.he lived in queens village& explored the steam tunnels on the grounds of creedmore.he stated that during one of his jaunts he came across a door in the tunnel wall, upon opening it he claims to be on the track bed of a tiled, island platform station with creedmore on the walls.upon researching old long island press articles about the queens ind.it seems that the people in the vicinity of hillside ave.&237st were pushing real hard to have the ind.extended to at least there.I take this with a grain of salt, having been into the blueprint room at creedmore several years ago I found no evidense of a station.at hillside&winchester blvd on creedmore grounds new condos went up at least 5 years ago.henseforth any access to that section of steam tunnel is forever sealed up.could it be? why not, thats the romantic in me.this same person WAS in the irt ext.at flatbush&nostrand before it was sealed off.the vents in the sidewalk were concreted over &clearly visible to anyone looking down.they were removed at least 5 or more years ago when a store went up next to the irt tunnel.there is no trace of the tunnel ext.
