Yeah, it sucked but you kept moving up and down and the old coats were pretty warm with the gloves on. Only downside was the geese whining about you opening the storm door and the wind on them. I liked it though, kept my operating area empty. :) |

They could do 145st-2nd av via CPW Express, with switching to the local at 34st/6th.Though the 53st portion is part of the "shopping" experience, the same argument could be made for 59st Columbus Circle. |

Worked those fairly regularly during my vacation relief days back in the 80s. CC to Rock Park, 5 on the GG on weekends, occasionally even on the A still, R-10s were no stranger to me. Big difference is that the museum cars are well-maintained are in tons better shape than the 10s were back then. Back in the 80s, your troubleshooting skills were tested on an hourly basis. |

That would explain why C/Rs on both the R-1/9s, D types and other cars with outside door controls operated in the FORWARD car of the operating position. That way, the rush of cold air would not come into the car like a blast freezer. |

The C/R indication lights were on both sides of the position and indicated for the appropriate section. The forward light indicate the forward section was closed and the rear light indicated the rear section was closed. The R-15 had their external C/R indication lights in the same place but since they were a bit difficult to see from inside the cab, R-16s and up had the indication light moved to the bulkhead opposite the M/M's cab. |

What I always found pretty remarkable though is that with all the steel dust, you could see the lights all the way to both ends on just about every consist. We spotted them at Times Square and bailed from our n/b train, making a beeline to the s/b platform and boarding in time. |
