Then you can probably also smell the contingent of unwashed, dirty-clothed railfans who will be happy to join you. Check eBay for gas masks.

Yeah - I never could understand that with some transitfans. A few years ago my wife was at BusFest with me when she commented that some of the fans were "smelly" and that there's no way they have girlfriends:-).

You know, it is possible that some of those railfans do keep up their hygiene and still smell. There are forums for people who suffer from BO and can't seem to solve the issue despite the fact that they bath/shower, wash their clothes like a normal person etc....

I'm shocked after all these years no one has did any research on the subject and just jump to conclusion that they don't take care of themselves just because they like trains.

You are right but there are other factors that may come into play here. I'll accept that there are persons who can't control body odor, but it's very difficult to believe they keep up their hygiene with dirty, unwashed clothes, unshaven (if not deliberately growing facial hair), etc. Then also remember there are chemicals and sprays to at least mask problem body odor that can be prescribed by a doctor. However, the sheer number of these unwashed ones on any given fantrip makes me believe they really don't care about their personal appearance. Very sad. I do believe that a similar problem exists in many other "fan" groups regardless of the subject they are "fanning."

Correct. And the shoppers, and add NYC visitors to that, makes the routing correct. Yes, it's a bit boring, but we at least have it and are able to experience inexpensive antique rides at least once a year. Be thankful for what exists.

The current route is sufficient. The R1/9's run for the primary benefit of the general public, not for the railfans who would obviously want a variety of routes.

IMO there is only one other useful routing: 168 to WTC, barring GO's of course.

Now you know how conductors on the CC/C felt when that line went all the way out to Rockaway Park with the R-10s.

I always got the biggest kick out of watching conductors do their stuff while perched on the step plates. Watching them slap-slap-slap as the train was leaving was even more fun.

To my knowledge, 103 has not started restoration yet. That car will need a lot of work, as it's in very poor condition. The frame is warped, it has rust here & there, and will need a serious paint job too. You're not gonna see 103 running for quite a few years.
Remember, that most of the work done on any museum cars is done by volunteers.
