IAWTP. On a similar note, has anyone *ever* used and ?

You have to if you want to be by-the-book standards compliant (ie: making a website for a college course, or for a government entity). I know a few web content people who rage at the improper use of .

The benefit of those tags is the behavior can be modified easily via stylesheet; if you did that with you would be redefining the meaning of the word bold.

The whole point of is to make text bold. What's the point then of and ? Yeah, I get the stylesheets, but why not just use if you just want to make text bold?

You have to look at the reason *why* you are making the text bold. If you are using it to bring attention to something, you are supposed to use . If you only want to make the text bold for syntactical reasons (ie: html versions of linux man pages) is to be used.

Similarly, you would use to emphasize something, but to italicize something (as in a book title).

One main beneficiary of these extra tags is screen readers. A blind person does not care whether you made the text bold, 3 sizes larger and have Red Helvetica text. They only care that you are trying to bring attention to it, and using the or tags helps in that regard.
