Year is 1906. Note the Manhattan car loop, with it's underground power conduit on the right, and the mass of BRT owned lines meeting at the left. You can even see the old Broadway el and the subway connection on the Bridge being built in the distance:

Your statement that "Shorpy does not allow hotlinking" is simply incorrect when the site clearly states: Non-Commercial Use For private, non-commercial or non-marketing purposes you can use selected, small (512 pixels wide) images from Shorpy. You may not recreate the entire site, sections, collections or galleries on your server or in any publication. If you use an image from Shorpy be sure to include a link back to the original post or the full-size version of the image on Shorpy. Do not add Shorpy photos to Flickr or other photo sharing sites. Emphasis added for the critical thinkers here. Given statement and the fact that the website does not block direct linking to the image there would seem to be no prohibition on using their smaller image as a thumbnail for a link to the page with the larger image. OTOH, your placement of the image on Photobucket because you suck at the internet is a clear violation of the website's policy on the distribution of its material. I'll just have you know the formatting looked awesome on preview, I forgot that it'd interact with the formatting on the regular board in a different way. And yeah, I see the hotlinking thing, you were right Chris. You approach in this post was absolutely the correct way to approach the problem. But my main point remains, that photo needs to be removed from Photobucket lest you arouse the ire of the webmaster and lead to even more stringent controls on his photos.

Any claim they have to copyright is highly questionable. I would respect them more if the photo was in their private collection and they were publishing scans of those images. In that case they could claim copyright over THEIR SCAN, but still not of the original image Meanwhile. If I like an image I just go to the LOC and download the high res version myself without the Shorpy watermark

I am guilty of that myself on my site - I feel that while it is true that the source documents are public domain, I spent my money to acquire them so I am entitled to protect them to some extent. OTOH downloading an image from the LOC cost absolutely nothing to Shorpy, yet they act as if they own it. I will grant that they provide an easier way to search for pictures than the LOC, but I just go to the source :) As an example here is the LOC version of the H&M car A little cropping, sharpening and a clone stamp or two in photoshop and you get to Shorpy's version

If I printed this one, I'd surely take Photoshop to it first and make it look better.
