Your daily dose of 80's nostalgia, care of nycsubway.org

When will he run out? Hopefully, not soon.

Finally, a pic of an R44 interior showing those ugly under-seat supports which disappeared during GOH. Note the advertisement for Eastern Airlines:

The original strip maps on the rollsigns:

The R46's looked different, and some black and white versions of those signs were installed on the R42's in the early 80's.

Remember the "paper Q"? Here's a paper R. These were common in the 80's, with all those busted rollsigns:

Female conductors were common by the early 90's, but still a novelty in the mid 80's:

An R38, just back from GOH. This was the first car class to get the massive overhauls, and I remember my first encounter with one in the spring of 1987. I thought they were brand new cars. It took me a while to see that they were existing cars fixed up:

The diamond N only went to Whitehall St:

One of the indignities the Sea Beach line had to endure during the 1980's was the loss of it's clean fleet of cars when they swapped the N and R in Queens in May of 1987. Though many new R68's would appear on the line rather quickly, there were still many dirty cars (mostly R32's like this) which infested the line for most of the rest of the year:

Inside was just as bad:

Someone with GE dun goofed and forgot to replace this relic rollsign:

When not touring with Queen, front man Freddie Mercury like to pass the time by doing some freelance conducting:

The old R46 rollsigns, which lacked any strip maps:

The short lived R to Jamaica:

R68 on the R, WTF?

The R10's challenged the R16's for the title of shittiest looking cars in the mid 1980's:

Unlike the R16, many R10's would get a reprieve and a makeover:

Hopefully Dave keeps this up. I've been nostalgin' HARD the last month or so!

It's amazing that I became one DURING this era. Since I was born in 1972, I had no memories of a subway system as anything but cruddy and graffiti splattered. It looks horrible now, but at the time, it was just normal, everyday stuff.

Since I was born in 1972, I had no memories of a subway system as anything but cruddy and graffiti splattered.

In contrast, I was born a decade after you with limited exposure and memories of this era except for a R-46 passing by local stops on the Queens Railway and the pre-GOH R-32 being noisy with flickering lights which isn't helpful to a young railfan. I really didn't start riding until 2001 when I started my internship and began to explore more of the system after that...

I remember when the (N) had a bunch of pre GOH cars. Took the (N) out of Stillwell with my grandmother and mom after a day at the beach and the Brighton (D) was not running for some reason so we got kicked off this shiny new R68 and remember getting on this cruddy train with blue seats and the doors open between every car.

Remember the R46 with the blue stripe!

Wow, a 1985 rollsign with pre-85 signs in that R38 (A) shot...now that's cool.

Only a few of those Akzidenz-Grotesk R68 destination rollsigns remain. L have seen 5063 that has the Akzidenz-Grotesk side bullet sign now.

Yeah, these were the 1985 signs, they received another set of signs in the months prior to Archer Ave opening, but only for lines that could realistically run out of Jamaica Yard (E/F/G/N/R). I recall the original R46 signs which had the route on the outside on a white background (with the origin and destination on a black backgound) and inside was a strip map which ran on a single line, instead of around the edge, as on the R44's.

1972 was the year I started riding the Paris Métro by myself and exploring the system on my own.

While I missed any pre-1987 NYC actions in person, I got to see with my own eyes what was going on in Paris, London and Tokyo then, so I can't complain.

Yes, back then, you had to figure out everything yourself through observation. Also, Brian Cudey's book, "Under the Sidewalks of NY" was like the subway bible. I remember my college library had that, and I took it out and learned so much from it.

I rember that too!!! As a matter of fact when I rode my first R-46 in 1975 I imediately noticed the different front side and side roll sign with the strip. It was an F train with the Purple Color.

I thought London and Tokyo largley missed out on the vandalism wave. I know Paris was a graffiti center though.

I didn't even have that. Not only did I not have inside information, I was very reluctant to let anyone else know about my hobby. Well into the 90's I thought my subway buffery was a potential embarrassment. I usually had to lie to my parents about what I was doing when I was out riding the system. Had they known, they'd have been very angry (hey, it was dangerous back then).

I had no idea how many others shared this interest until I went online.

That shiny new R-32 Norton train that I rode on back on July 21, 1965 was immaculate.

I had a relative that also liked the subway, and I "hid" my liking of it until about 1990 or so. At that point, we decided to "ride every line at least once" completing the map of riding every line (not at the same time). I finished that about 1992 or so, when I completed the Far Rockaway stub end. (Funny, I had been to Rockaway Park by the mid 1980's, but never the Far Rockaway end, and with that small segment, my map was "complete".
My parents were aware of it by the end, but at the beginning, we would say we were "going to the movies" or something, and instead would be riding the subway up to the Bronx or someplace, lol.
That even started when I was younger, and we would say to my mother that we were going to the movies at the local movie theater, but instead, would take the subway to some far off movie theater....My mother probably would have killed me had she known I was "alone" (without adults) taking the subway through East New York, etc, lol.

I was stuck in Japan from 1981 to 1987 and didn't go to Europe at all. Graffiti in Paris and London happened during that period. When I finally went to both cities in 1989, the clean up had already started.

Graffiti in parts of Tokyo happened in the 1990s but on a much smaller scale.
