Since I was born in 1972, I had no memories of a subway system as anything but cruddy and graffiti splattered.

In contrast, I was born a decade after you with limited exposure and memories of this era except for a R-46 passing by local stops on the Queens Railway and the pre-GOH R-32 being noisy with flickering lights which isn't helpful to a young railfan. I really didn't start riding until 2001 when I started my internship and began to explore more of the system after that...
