There was no cover even in the 60's, when the ice would be on the 3rd rail you could see the flashes at night from far off it lit up the sky, and if you would be under the elevated at night sometimes you would see what looked like welders sparks fall to the street below, saw that on the trolley ROW under the Fresh Pond Rd station I wish I caught that on film.
