It provided jobs and a resurgence in farm economy. American farmers could feed the world AND fuel cars if somebody would PAY them to work. When the income from crops do not cover farm inputs then they cannot work. Many of those "farm" programs pay money to take land OUT of production, a sop to the environmentalists. When fuel prices went up FARM PRODUCTION ALSO WENT UP because there was money to be made in fuel crops. But by how much *Really* did your food prices go up? Not much,eh? most of the costs at your end of the food chain come from packagers shippers and sellers. NOW as for bid-free contracts with HALIBURTON. You are full of bovine by-product. THOSE contracts were bid and signed in the Clinton years. When Bush needed to ramp up support services for troops overseas, Haliburton already *had* the contingency contract for such services, and while they were new services, it was an old service agreement that was already in place.
