It's not the physical facilities at Continental that prevent turning more trains. It's NYCT's policies and procedures. When I moved to NYC in 1973, It was rare to see more than 2 trains waiting between there and 67th to get into the station. As the years progressed, the queue grew into the notorious 'conga line', moving the point where crawl and holding delays begin on the line ever further south toward Roosevelt. My unofficial/unscientific observations put it at 2 or 3 additional trains joining the conga for each change in "the rules" that slows things down. If the politicos do get their way, there's going to be a lot of "who's the Einstein who thought this up?" happening and "suddenly" Continental will be able to turn 3 lines...or they're going to have to clean up Roosevelt Upper and lay some rails. |
