There's no reason that old fashioned ceramic tile can't be colored. In fact, at some stations it is.

That said, having alternating swaths of large white and blue (or yellow or red or whatever) tiles doesn't do it for me.

And, to my eyes, at least, white-on-black signs are a lot less interesting than mosaic name tablets. Even if the name tablets on the line are all in the same style, they're hardly identical.
