As a stockholder of various RRs starting 65 years ago, I have very little respect for their current behaviors. We, the citizens license them to provide services. We oversee safety, because as history has shown the perennially stingy managements rarely make safety improvements without being forced. Or as many a railworker has written "every safety rule is written in blood".The current era of operating ratio obsessed Wall Street driven PSR is proof to me that we, the citizenry need to more agressive, not less. For example, under PSR trains too long to fit on passing sidings (often on former two main track routes) cause major delays when they break down between sidings. IMHO, outlawing trains any longer than the shortest passing siding on the particular division would be a good start. |
