After I found out about this line's existence (which was in 1987), I went out dozens of times to look at it. While the stretch from Fingerboard Road to the expressway, and then from the expressway to Robin Road was destroyed in 1987, remnants remained in Rosebank for years after that- the St. John's Avenue trestle even got a paintjob and a NYSDOT number sticker in the early 1990s, the Virginia Road trestle lasted until early 1999, and one girder from an trestle at Willow Avenue lasted until sometime in the 1990s. Some embankment was visible at that spot (Willow Avenue) until the 1990s as well. I think it was a travesty that the City and State allowed this route, and the North Shore route, to die. |
