Draw a line with a pencil 1/2" long. That is the contact of one wheel with the rail. And that is steel on steel. Not much friction there.

Besides if you wheels are sliding, you have no control. Your brakes provide better stopping when the wheel is not sliding, and the weight of the trains is not on the brakes.
