I remember riding "Old Myrt" in the old budding days of early railfandom. I liked sitting in the cross seat, elbow on the window sill with the lower window opened in the summer. The ride was slow and quaint, but what was the rush anyway ?I rode the last revenue train out of Bridge-Jay Sts. in 1969. Don Harold recently cleared up one thing I stated and that was when heading north, a southbound train passed us. I thought that was the last train, but that was a train sent to pick up the last of the cash and tokens and line was closed to the general public. The ERA had a fantrip on the weekend, but I missed that. The last train consisted of 99% railfans and maybe 1% riding public. Enroute, light bulbs, seats and car cards were being stolen, but those cars were going to be scrapped anyway. There was no crime or vandalism, just sad railfans celebrating an end of an era. Even people along the ROW were leaning out their windows and waving to us. Bill "Newkirk" |
