Apart from the possibility of a collision occurring along a route, having track centers of 20+ feet makes it a hell of a lot easier to do maintenance without requiring a wayside restriction on the track remaining in service. Yet somehow having two or three tracks where once there were four tracks is always cited by foamers as being a prime example of railroad 'waste'. |
