In 1993, the MTA embarked on a "showcase" program in which the A and D ran 4 car trains of 75 ft cars on a slightly shorter headway on weekends. On several weekends during that time, I was sent to various locations along the A and D lines to monitor the on time performance or lack thereof on those lines. Around that same time the MTA also issued new sat and Sun timetables for the N and R which at the time were both running local between Lex/60 St Manh and 59/4 Bkln which shortened the headway with the intention or running 4 car trains of 75 footers on those lines. The N work program was even cut in such a way that crews on Astoria putins originating at C/Hall Yd were supposed to bring an 8 car train to Astoria and cut it on the stand to make 2 X 4 car intervals. It never worked properly because at the time, while the weekend R was 100% R-46, the N had a mixed fleet of R-68s and 32s and although, all the R-32s were supposed to be laid up over the weekend leaving a 100% weekend R-68 fleet, it was never done so the N ran 600 ft trains anyhow. Now that the N is 100% R-160, while the operation could be done, with the N now running exp in Bkln and via the Manny B, 4 car R-46 R trains wouldn't be able to handle the passenger loads. |
