I understand that, but they were still deemed obsolete for MU service, and would have been gone regardless if they did not have a diesel service to shove hand-me downs.

They could have just bought sufficient M-1's to replace the MP54 (in 1966, the order number was to be 500), and buy cheaper Comet-I's for the diesel lines.
