The loss of marker lights wasn't without consequence for the public. I recall the conductor's test I took about 1965 or so had a question as to what was the LEAST important consequence of having the wrong marker lights. One of the WRONG answers was "knowledgeable riders will get on the wrong train" or words to that effect.

For regular riders markers gave more information than the front letters -- on some services it told you the terminal or whether the train was short-lined. On the Brighton in the evening, if a train came in on the local track with red-green markers instead of red-red or white-white it meant the last express was gone, so don't wait for one.
