Seems to me this all traces back to European hubris and envy of the United States. They tried to create a United States of Europe without taking into account the inherent differences. Now they're tap dancing as fast as they can, looking to patch the whole thing up. Seems to me the main thing holding the Euro together now is fear of what happens when they pull the plug. When times are good, anything works, but when the shit hits the fan... |

They tried to create a United States of Europe without taking into account the inherent differences. And more to the point, without introducing the inherent subsidy of the poorer regions by the more wealthy. NY has been subsidizing MS since 1932. That's accepted in the US. But Germany doesn't want to subsidzie Greece forever. Also, of course, there is the language issue. People from MS have been moving north and west since 1929 and even before then and getting jobs in their new locations, or welfare if they can't find jobs. People from Greece may be allowed to move to Germany but they won't get welfare benefits or jobs there so easily. |

Precisely ... no central bank, no central government, and no "national philosophy" ... while Olog's been flailing over it all these years, I've been pointing out how it was doomed to failure until any of these things had been done for real ... and remarkably, as obvious as the signs are now for the EU, they're still not forming a "united" states. |
