I just know that people down here have no respect for walkers. Sometimes I drive to the St. Pete Times Forum and walk a big chunk of the length of the TECO Car or around the Convention Center. One thing I miss about Queens is the walkability. That's one reason why I'm moving back next year. |

Idiots don't keep them on a leash. That's why I go downtown to walk around with the regular walkers and runners. But it's really hot here and most people join a gym to walk.I check ny1 weather and cry over how nice the weather is in NY compared to here. I should spend Labor Day up north. |

Along with lack of driver respect, one big problem in Orlando is that bus stops can be halfway between two lights. So people cross there. If they just moved the stops to the traffic lights they'd remove a major temptation. |

Interesting.....NYC is no where to be found on the list. I'm suprised considering some of the city streets have been sited in the pass as being dangerous, like Queens Blvd in Queens. |

NYC is near the very bottom (about #54) of the list of metro areas of over 1 million.NYC has a few dangerous roads. Orlando is a whole Metro area made of of Queens Blvds, but with higher speeds and fewer lights. |

The distance between lights in many sunbelt cities, especially in Florida, can be a mile or more apart. It's sometimes setup so that you either have to walk miles to cross the street, take your life in your hands by crossing with cars traveling 50+ mph that do not stop or slow down for pedestrians, or drive across the street.I've mentioned before that I once stayed in a hotel in Tampa that was across the street from a restaurant. The intersection was controlled, but they had neglected to install crosswalks or pedestrian signals. In order to cross I had to wait for the green for cars which was not only not long enough for pedestrians, but the cars did not stop and were turning in front and behind me while I was in the intersection. It was pretty scary. At another hotel in Pasco County I was at a hotel on a very busy street with lots of businesses without a car and there was literally nowehere to safely cross for miles in either direction. It's just insane. They really discourage pedestrians. |

To be honest with you, I would cross between lights if I had to cross. It's actually safer. At least it is in Tampa. Orlando might be a little different. |

I used to do parts of that too, Clearwater Beach is good for a walk if you're not all that far away. But in August and September...eh.We miss walking in Minneapolis for the reasons you cited. I fully agree with you. I had wondered if Miami is easier in general, although like the other places you have to drive to walk. There's really a combination of issues that make it all unwalkable, there isn't a silver bullet. Ever since they invented the commute things have moved this way. And then the immigration from NY and Latin America, and the icky design of society. |

But to stop at a red light you're about a half mile to a mile away in Orlando, so it all works out!Not like anyone donates any shelters, it's a ditch with a sign on the side of a highway. Do you remember what part of Pasco County? I guess you would've probably been on US19. It's better in most of Pasco than the county south of it, I don't even like driving on that. |

I felt like I was the only one waiting on the pedestrian signals. Plus one huge thing that you have that makes it safer for pedestrians is no right on red. That is a pedestrian unfriendly law and shouldn't be as widespread as it is now. Many of our pedestrian accidents out here involve people making a right on red. |
