Here is an experiment you can try, regardless of where you live. You have to be prepared to suffer some life changes if you do it, though. Weather permitting, put on a gay pride T-shirt, and wear it into the business district of your town. I guarantee you will encounter hard looks, possibly worse, from some people--and you may lose a few friends if they see you, too. This little social experiment is not for the faint of heart.I had a good (straight) friend of mine, who is 6'4, 265 lbs. of solid, mop-up-the-floors-with-you muscle try this--at his wager! He didn't make it very far in his town (Hicksville) before he became so uncomfortable with the looks he got (yes, we hit the Broadway Mall), he had to go back to the car to change. He said later he really got an education, because he didn't believe me when I used to tell him how much shit we gays take from the world at large. In one store, a woman's face screwed up in total disgust at my friend's T-shirt, which read, simply, "NYC Gay Pride 2009" over a rainbow flag. Walking a mile in someone else's shoes can be broadening. |

Howard Beach is where the Italians live in nice homes.As for the neighbor dispute, that shit has been going on for years. Still does. My friend who is white almost had a fist fight with his neighbor a few weeks ago. My friends mom was picked up by a cab and the cab made a turn into a neighbors driveway to turn around instead of driving around the block. Driveway was still damp from a painting. Neighbor said something to my friend and that's all it took for an argument. I have relatives who wanted to rent from Germans on Wycoff Ave. They had to get a German friend to vouch for them that they were good Italians and could be trusted not to ruin the apartment and pay the rent. |

I beg to differ. Both Rockwood Park and Hamilton Beach are considered part of Howard Beach. Rockwood Park runs from 79th to 92nd Street west of Crossbay Blvd., between 156th and 164th Avenues. According to the FDNY CAD Street Register (which I just consulted), this falls within Engine 331's coverage area, which is listed as Howard Beach and Broad Channel. |

The black church, the black family, and the mores of the black community perpetuated by these create an environment that is highly toxic and sometimes fatal to black gay men.I've worked with cops, EMT's and firefifghers for 20 years. I can say without reservation that none of them are as brave as a very close friend of mine, a feminine black gay man. If he weighs 120 lbs. soaking wet, that's saying something. Yet, he goes out every day, living as he IS, completely incapable of defending himself, knowing full well someone might just kill him for being who he IS. That's courage. |

West Hamilton Beach has their own volunteer fire department. Their firehouse is across the street from the IND subway tracks, and their department operates one engine, a stump jumper, and an ambulance. However, E331 is still first due in West Hamilton Beach, which the city (and the MTA, BTW) carry on the books as Howard Beach.If the residents of this area are "confrontational towards strangers", why on earth would I want to go there? |

Good thought. If someone's car gets keyed for flat tires or worse, as you say, smashed up, I guess the person who spray painted the lines will be a suspect. |

But they're somewhat incompatible. Republican economics is for government to get out of the way of business and Democratic social policies include requiring that businesses participate (affirmative action, set asides, etc.) |
