Here is an experiment you can try, regardless of where you live. You have to be prepared to suffer some life changes if you do it, though. Weather permitting, put on a gay pride T-shirt, and wear it into the business district of your town. I guarantee you will encounter hard looks, possibly worse, from some people--and you may lose a few friends if they see you, too. This little social experiment is not for the faint of heart.I had a good (straight) friend of mine, who is 6'4, 265 lbs. of solid, mop-up-the-floors-with-you muscle try this--at his wager! He didn't make it very far in his town (Hicksville) before he became so uncomfortable with the looks he got (yes, we hit the Broadway Mall), he had to go back to the car to change. He said later he really got an education, because he didn't believe me when I used to tell him how much shit we gays take from the world at large. In one store, a woman's face screwed up in total disgust at my friend's T-shirt, which read, simply, "NYC Gay Pride 2009" over a rainbow flag. Walking a mile in someone else's shoes can be broadening. |
