I was thinking about this thread two days ago when I was on the JR Parkway. That road is not as extreme as some claim, aside from the stretch between Cypress Hills and the Jewish Cemeteries. The rest of the road, while surely below the other more upgraded parkways is still drivable at 55-60. |

It was worse before the work in the mid 80's. The lanes were narrower and the divider was very low, like a curb. To me the worst part is E/B just after Metropolitan when it goes under Queens Blvd by the Union Tnpk Station. Now if you want a really hairy stretch of old parkway try the Taconic Pkway in Putnam County between Rt 84 and a few miles south of the Pudding Street intersection, especially Southbound.

Just remember DO NOT BLINK after making that right turn after coming off the bridge, you are in the most hair raising downhill twisting experience in NY State. |

The Taconic is still a drive - - I breath a sigh of relief when I cross mile 38 northbound (for I84) or mile 24 southbound (entering Westchester county when it becomes 3 lanes).Mileposts 24 through 38 in Putnam county are very dangerous in the worst conditions. The day of the 2010 blizzard Sunday, I opted to use the NY State Thruway all the way down. Even that highway was BAD!! |
