It's possible that one can use their entire mental abilities to calm themselves in the face of such an intense wait.I really like Germany's chances. They are my favorite team of the ones left and usually one of the European teams that I pull for. |

FIFA has ruined soccer beyond recognition; not that soccer could ever be as good as rugby that is, but the hype is just outrageous. A simple foul resulting in a disciplinary committee meeting and a one-match suspension? What a joke; imagine the NFL being so hobbled (one-game suspension for pass interference, for example). |

Up to now the criminal junkie's players could carry him but against somebody like Germany you need a real coach, not a strung-out ball of lard. Godd riddance to Maradona. As for Spain, they will choke in the semis. They can't help themselves. Their defense are going to fuck up in the penalty box. |

I want to know why a "handball" in the goal area results in the FIFA Disciplinary Committee convening?Suarez got off easy. It's just a one-match suspension. His handball in the box was the reason his team got through. I would have done the same thing with time expiring but it is somewhat unsportsmanlike. The Committee convened because there were legitimate calls to ban him for both remaining games. He'll instead get to play in either the Final or the 3rd place match. Why does it result in a minimum one match suspension? A red card results in a minimum one match suspension because there would otherwise be no disincentive for a player to do something flagrantly and unacceptably outrageous in the final minutes of a match. The NBA has similiar rules for ejected players or for multiple technical fouls (their version of a yellow card) over a number of games. |

He definitely did the right thing though. There would be no next game for then without that handball. |

This business of considering a more severe punishment after the fact is like making up the rules as they go along. He definitely did the right thing though.No. Players get punished more severely if the offense is terrible (punching the ref, smashing an opposing player's face on purpose). In 2006, Daniele De Rossi got a four-match suspension for breaking Brian McBride's face in the USA-Italy game. Same when Ron Artest and others were suspended for a long time for punching fans during the Indiana-Detroit brawl. Some offenses are worse than others and should be treated accordingly. There would be no next game for then without that handball. I agree and that's why he did it. I would have done the same but I think that a two-game suspension would have been appropriate. He would still be a hero to his teammates and countryfolk. |

Well the NBA at the time didn't have a set punishment for brawling with fans but FIFA has a set penalty for a handball. That's all that he should get IMO.And that's all they gave Suarez. He got the routine one-match suspension for getting red-carded regardless of circumstances. Suarez wasn't red-carded for mere "handballing". He was red-carded for "denying the opponent a clear scoring opportunity". That's an automatic red card. It ususally happens when a beaten and dribbled-around goalie takes down an opponent who's about to score. This time it was a non-goalie doing the equivalent. I'm not disagreeing with FIFA. They went by precedent and strictly by the rules. However, I think that in the future they should add a new guideline for when these things happen in the final minutes and the result of the match depends on it and make it an aggravating circumstance resulting in a two-game ban. |

Maradona in post-match altercation with German fans By Brooks Peck Immediately after Argentina's 4-0 quarterfinal loss to Germany on Saturday, Maradona was understandably upset. And according to Argentina's Diarios y Noticias, he let a group of German fans know it. A translation of their report: Argentina national team coach Diego Maradona had an altercation with German fans after the end of the match that marked the elimination of said team from the 2010 South Africa World Cup. Apparently upset over post game celebrations by fans located behind the Argentinean bench, Maradona approached and scolded them, until Dalma, one of his daughters, entered the field and contained him. It's a shame the man who has entertained us all over the last few weeks with his exuberance and delightful antics had to get involved in something like this. He would go on to say that this loss was "the most disappointing moment in my life" which shows just how devastated he must have been as he walked off the pitch and saw German fans in red and yellow wigs partying like it's Oktoberfest in July right behind him. A sad end for the most interesting man of the tournament. Or anywhere else. |

The airport's anti-drug chief, Colonel José Piedrahita, said the statue had been found inside a carton destined for Madrid during a routine check of a mail warehouse on Friday; standing 36cm (14in) high, it was painted gold with green stripes on the base. Piedrahita said a lab test confirmed the cup was made of 11kg (24lb) of powder, which would have been mixed with acetone or petrol to make it into a paste that could be moulded. The cocaine would be worth up to £1m on the street. |

I have to admit that I watched today (the last 30 minutes anyway) because Holland is in it....it got pretty intense in the end. All the Dutch players were smiling and slapping eachother and "celebrating their win", and they let the other team get a goal while they are all celebrating. It would have been pretty messed up if they tied at the end.Another criticsm of soccer is the seemingly ridiculousness with the clock. Once it gets past 90 minutes, they should have a downwards going clock for the extra time they tack on for delays. It is absolutely nuts not knowing when the whistle will be blown. At least in football you can see the clock running out. In any event, I will have a battle of my cultures if Germany wins over Spain. But I like my Dutch side better, so..... |
