This business of considering a more severe punishment after the fact is like making up the rules as they go along. He definitely did the right thing though.No. Players get punished more severely if the offense is terrible (punching the ref, smashing an opposing player's face on purpose). In 2006, Daniele De Rossi got a four-match suspension for breaking Brian McBride's face in the USA-Italy game. Same when Ron Artest and others were suspended for a long time for punching fans during the Indiana-Detroit brawl. Some offenses are worse than others and should be treated accordingly. There would be no next game for then without that handball. I agree and that's why he did it. I would have done the same but I think that a two-game suspension would have been appropriate. He would still be a hero to his teammates and countryfolk. |
